ليس هناك من هو أفضل من "جان جاك روسو" ذاته ليعرفنا بكتابه "أصل التفاوت بين الناس" فهو يقول: «أتكلم عن الإنسان ، وأعلم من المسألة التى أبحث فيها أننى أكلم الناس ، وأتصور وجود نوعين للتفاوت فى الجنس البشرى ، فالنوع الأول هو ما أدعوه الطبيعى؛ لأنه من وضع الطبيعة ، ويقوم على اختلاف الأعمار والصحة وقوة البدن وصفات النفس أو الروح ، والنوع الثانى هو ما يمكن أن أدعوه التفاوت الأدبى أو السياسى؛ لتوقفه على ضرب من العهد ، ولقيامه بتراضى الناس ، ..... ، ومن العبث أن يسأل عن مصدر التفاوت الطبيعى ؛ لوجود الجواب فى تعريف الكلمة البسيط ، وأقل من ذلك: إمكان البحث عن وجود ارتباط جوهرى بين التفاوتين، وذلك لأن هذا يعنى ـ فقط ـ أن يُسْأل بكلمات أخرى عن كَوْن القابضين على زمام القيادة أفضل ممن يطيعون بحكم الضرورة ، وعن وجود قوة البدن أو الروح ، وعن وجود الحكمة أو الفضيلة ، فى الأفراد أنفسهم دائمًا ، وعلى نسبة قوتهم أو ثرائهم. وقد يكون من الخير إثارة هذا السؤال بين العبيد على مسمع من سادتهم ، ولكن مع عدم ملاءمته لأناس من العقلاء والأحرار الذين يبحثون عن الحقيقة!».
