Chagoi Japanese Koi Carp Cyprinus CarpioThe Chagoi (CHAH-goy) koi, literally translating to ‘brown carp’ are an old variety of koi that look very similar to the wild carp. The word 'Cha' meaning brown comes from the word 'Ocha' which means tea and these koi were originally named Ochagoi due to their resemblance to the brown tea colour. Very quickly, however, the 'O' was dropped as the farmers put emphasis on the 'chah' sound, leaving us with the name we are all familiar with today. The Chagoi koi are typically referred to as the ’gentle giant’ as they tend to grow much bigger than other koi varieties and are very docile around people. They will typically come and greet you at the top of the pond, be willing to be touched, and will often encourage other koi in the pond to be more friendly.
Many Chagoi koi, but not all, also have a reticulation pattern in their scales. Some koi keepers prefer the Chagoi to be a bit more interesting while others prefer to keep the variety natural and as similar to the wild version as possible. Therefore, both versions are still popular and therefore bred. This reticulation pattern is called fukurin (FOO-koo-REEN) and gives the fish a net-like appearance with each scale having a darker border.
History of Chagoi
Chagoi koi were first bred in the Taisho Era (the period from 1912 to 1926 when Emperor Taisho controlled Japan). These koi were different from the many other varieties of ornamental carp as they were not bred specifically to create a variety of koi, or for a particular colour, pattern or even skin type. Instead, Chagoi were created accidentally from selectively breeding traits in the common carp that made them more valuable as food and easier to keep. That is, they bred the fish to be big as well as tame and friendly. With each new generation of Magoi (common carp), the farmers chose to grow on and breed only the biggest, friendliest fish and within only a few generations, the majority of fish born were lovely and tame. At this point, their colours had changed a little and they were significantly different from the wild Magoi in both size and temperament that they were often kept as pets and even sold as pets rather than as food. It was at this point that the variety was formally named the Chagoi.
As the years passed and more varieties were developed, it became clear that the breeding methods used to stabilise the varieties were having a negative effect on the size of the koi and the rate of growth. Koi that were significantly different from the wild koi, such as Doitsu koi, typically grew a lot slower and rarely reached the same size as Chagoi koi. Even today, almost all the prizes for the largest koi go to Chagoi koi and the variety has the largest percentage of Jumbo koi (koi from a good bloodline of larger fish).

Great chew
My pup’s favorite, great quality and it doesn’t give him a tummy ache. Lasts a good while and keeps him occupied.

Awesome!
**update: we have had this toy for over a year! I have found one other con. Once chewed if you step on it you will immediately drop to the floor in agonizing all encompassing pain or (my personal favorite) say every dirty curse word you have ever heard while clutching your destroyed instep. BUT even though this chewed bone is the demon child of a LEGO and a race car to step on my dogs still love it, still chew it and we haven’t had to replace it yet!
I have an insane chewer where toys usually last us less than 24 hours. It has become almost impossible for us to keep up with toys because of how expensive it has become. This toy is not only insanely durable but she has not left it alone for the 3 days we’ve had it.
I was concerned that being “chicken flavored” would mean stinky or sticky and I was very pleasantly surprised that it was neither! It doesn’t leave a stain once chewed, it doesn’t smell, and it doesn’t have a weird coating on it.
The only con so far is that due to it being so durable and hard it makes a loud noise when dropped on the tile or hardwood which made her nervous toward it at first but now that she’s started working on it she could care less about the noise. Super happy with this purchase and will 100% buy more in various sizes for our other pups.

Quieter than most toys and my dog loves them
Color: Football, Size: One-Size
These footballs have saved my life. I think I’ve bought close to 10 at this point? And toys primarily living outside in Texas heat is the only reason I’ve had to buy so many. In general, they are pretty durable but will get cracked if you leave them in the sun.
I have a German Shepherd who absolutely loves playing in the backyard but also takes his responsibilities as a guard dog very seriously so he barks a LOT while he is out there and unfortunately we live in the suburbs so I’m constantly bringing him inside that way he isn’t bothering the neighbors.
That is, until I got this football. The grunts are pretty quiet which is a win in my book because my dog communicates by way of squeak toy. You might think I’m joking but if I have guests over and we are having a conversation, he comes in the room and squeaks his toys violently to participate in the discussion.
For that reason, it takes me an hour to pick out a new toy at the store because I stand in the aisle squeaking every single once until I find one I think I can handle listening to 24/7. If you’re reading this review, you probably know that at a certain point, the squeaks can become unbearable. If that’s why you’re looking at this toy, you don’t have to read any further. Just buy it, you won’t regret it. That is reason enough for me to rate this 5 stars.
But the story doesn’t end there. What I did not foresee was him also using this wonderful grunting football to communicate with the neighbors. Now instead of barking outside, he grabs one of these footballs and squeaks it for all he’s worth while bucking around in circles like a bull. He still does it after having broken the noise maker in the toys. He just loves them so much.
Can I guarantee your dog will also take to squeaking this toy over barking? No. I didn’t do anything special to get him to do that, and I doubt I could train another dog to do so. Regardless, this toy has single handedly solved a lot of my dogs endearing but somewhat annoying habits in ways I could not have anticipated so maybe it’ll work for you too.

My dog's FAVORITE!
Color: Bunny (Red), Size: One-Size, Color: Bunny (Red), Size: One-Size
She goes through so many toys because she basically destroys them. This one the squeaker part broke after maybe a day or two but that's okay because she absolutely love this toy so much she wouldn't go anywhere without it. Even brought it with her on her walks which was completely a new thing. I hadn't seen her do that. She did not want to let it go. And she wanted to show it off to everyone. And when she gets upset when she is hanging out on the deck she will grab it to ease her anxiety. She also grabs it when she wants to show it off to other dogs. And she definitely wants to play tug of war with it as well which isn't a good idea. If you play tug of war it's going to come apart pretty easily. Other than that I would say it took about 3 weeks for it to rip apart. I'm on the fourth one in about 6 months. She still has the ones that are split in half.
But anytime I bring back a new one she gets so unbelievably excited and carries it with her everywhere again
