Thorn Hard Coral (Stylophora sp.)(Also known as Cat’s Paw Coral, Cluster Coral, or Bush Coral)
OverviewThe Thorn Hard Coral (Stylophora sp.) is a beautiful, compact small-polyp stony (SPS) coral, prized for its dense, branch-like growth and distinctive blunt, thorn-tipped branches. Its tightly clustered structure and vibrant colours — including pink, green, purple, tan, and fluorescent yellow — make it a favourite for aquarists seeking texture and vibrancy in their reef display. Often mistaken for Pocillopora or Seriatopora, Stylophora is distinguished by its thicker branches and more rounded tips. Hardy and fast-growing once established, this coral offers excellent movement and visual density, especially in SPS-dominant aquariums.
OriginNative to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Red Sea. In the wild, it inhabits upper reef slopes and shallow reef crests, thriving in bright light and strong, turbulent water flow.
FeedingThe Thorn Coral is photosynthetic, hosting zooxanthellae that provide most of its energy. However, it also benefits from supplemental feeding to enhance polyp growth and colour intensity. Feed 1–2 times per week with:
- Microplankton or marine snow
- Phytoplankton and powdered SPS coral foods
- Bacterioplankton or fine particulate blends
Feed in moderate flow so food is carried naturally across the polyps.
LightingHigh lighting.Stylophora requires strong illumination to maintain growth and vibrant colouration. Use high-output LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems.
- PAR range: 200–400 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
- Acclimate carefully to prevent bleaching.
- Blue and violet spectrums bring out its fluorescence, especially in pink and green morphs.
Strong, turbulent flow. Provide alternating or randomised current using wave pumps or gyres. This helps keep polyps extended, removes detritus, and supports oxygen exchange. Avoid constant, unidirectional flow, which may cause tissue stress.
Placement- Position on upper to mid rockwork, where it receives high light and vigorous flow.
- Allow 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) of space from neighbouring corals to prevent tissue contact.
- Ensure solid, stable mounting — Stylophora develops a thick base and can become heavy over time.
Reef safe. Compatible with:
- Peaceful reef fish (wrasses, gobies, tangs, anthias, clownfish, etc.)
- Shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs
- Other SPS corals (e.g., Acropora, Montipora, Pocillopora) with appropriate spacing
Avoid:
- Aggressive LPS corals with long sweeper tentacles (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)
- Butterflyfish or angelfish known to nip at SPS tips
Peaceful.Stylophora lacks long sweeper tentacles and does not sting other corals but should still be spaced to avoid overgrowth competition.
Experience LevelIntermediate to advanced. The Thorn Hard Coral thrives in stable, nutrient-controlled reef systems with strong light and flow. It’s less demanding than Acropora, making it a popular choice for aquarists progressing into SPS care.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8–10
- Calcium: 420–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: <5 ppm
- Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
- Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres (40 gallons); larger systems preferred for better parameter stability
Stable alkalinity and calcium are essential for skeletal strength and maintaining colour vibrancy. Trace elements such as iodine and strontium support healthy polyp tissue and branching growth.
Reef CompatibilityFully reef safe. The Thorn Hard Coral is an excellent structural coral that adds texture, density, and colour to SPS or mixed reefs. Its compact, thorny branches provide habitat for small reef fish and contribute to a natural, dynamic reefscape.
Interesting Fact
Stylophora pistillata, one of the best-known species, is frequently used in coral research because of its resilience to environmental stress — making it a model organism for studying coral biology and reef conservation.
