What you may not know is that in 1929, an organization known as the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform (WONPR), founded by Pauline Sabin, led the charge against Prohibition. Sabin found the hypocrisy of Prohibition and the politicians who supported resolutions for stricter enforcement intolerable and believed the law had failed in its mission.
The WONPR was able to unite women as a bipartisan, single-issue organization and became the largest repeal organization in the country with 1.5 million reported members nationwide. They held rallies and parades and purchased radio spots to aid in their efforts, which became a significant factor in the repeal of Prohibition.
