Творчий доробок Михайла Івченка (1890–1939) належить до малодосліджених сторінок сучасного літературознавства, адже його твори майже шістдесят років не перевидавалися. У 1919 р. вийшла друком перша збірка новел письменника 'Шуми весняні'. Після публікації у 1929 р. роману 'Робітні сили' та сумнозвісного процесу СВУ він був позбавлений можливості займатися літературною працею.

Полемічний роман 'Робітні сили' порушує питання становлення української інтелігенції, культури та розвитку нації в умовах тоталітарної держави. Головний герой твору, інтелігент-українець професор Савлутинський, повноправно бере участь у творенні нової епохи, залишаючись при цьому духовно незалежним від будь-якого ідеологічного тиску. Поглиблення його поглядів на розвиток суспільства, нації, людини відбувається внаслідок постійних роздумів, дискусій та внутрішньої боротьби.
