The clan derives its name from Dugald, one of the sons of Somerled of the Isles, who controlled Mull and Lorne in the thirteenth and fourteenth century. The clan was significant in shaping Scottish history, most notably by aiding in the defeat of a Viking fleet that had invaded the country in the Battle of Largs in 1263 and by supporting William Wallace, a renowned freedom fighter, during the Wars of Independence.
