Cleopatra — Vintage Afghan Wool Area RugThis is a typical Khal Mohammadi Design Rug, measuring 6 ft 8 in x 5 ft (203 cm x 153 cm) and which features the unique Deep Cherry Red base color for which these rugs are renowned. Mohammadi, an Ersari Turkoman, originally created this design in Kabul, Afghanistan, mid 1800s. Originally, all Khan Mohammadi rugs were produced in the family workshop which continued the tradition of making rugs according to the unique weaving, pattern design and dyeing
This is a typical Khal Mohammadi Design Rug, measuring 6 ft 8 in x 5 ft (203 cm x 153 cm) and which features the unique Deep Cherry Red base color for which these rugs are renowned. Mohammadi, an Ersari Turkoman, originally created this design in Kabul, Afghanistan, mid 1800s. Originally, all Khan Mohammadi rugs were produced in the family workshop which continued the tradition of making rugs according to the unique weaving, pattern design and dyeing techniques he developed, but, since the mid 1900s, most of these rugs have been woven around the town of Kunduz, located in the North of Afghanistan. However, the design and technique is also being used by Turkoman weavers in parts of Pakistan and Turkey. This rug continues the Khal Mohammadi tradition of using natural sheep wool, naturally dyed in the deep red tones he first developed, with dark blue or black used for detail. Whilst the Motif detail in the rugs can vary, the pattern is almost always one form of repeated columns of 'Gul' or 'Fil Pai' (Elephant Footprints) adapted from Mohammadi's Ersari Turkoman heritage.
