What Bug Burger Does

Bug Burger has two main uses, and it does both well:

1. Complete diet for feeder insects. Crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other commonly-bred feeder insects need both food and water. Traditionally, this meant dry feed in one dish, water gel or a wet sponge in another, and constant maintenance to prevent mould and drowning. Bug Burger replaces both with a single product. The gel is around 75% water once made, so it hydrates and feeds in one step. No more soggy sponges, no more water gel crystals, no more drowning crickets.

2. Gut-loading for nutritionally enhanced feeders. Calcium-fortified at minimum 4%, plus a comprehensive vitamin and mineral package. Insects fed Bug Burger become walking calcium and nutrient delivery systems — when reptiles, amphibians, or other predators eat them, they consume the calcium and vitamins held in the insect's gut. This is gut-loading, and it's how serious herp keepers ensure their reptiles and amphibians get adequate nutrition.

3. (Bonus) Supplementary feeding for isopods and detritivores. While not Bug Burger's primary purpose, it's also a useful supplementary food for detritivorous invertebrates. The plant-based formula, calcium fortification, and balanced vitamins translate well to isopod and millipede care.

Why Repashy Bug Burger?

One product feeds and hydrates. The single biggest practical advantage. For anyone running a cricket or roach colony for feeders, this dramatically simplifies maintenance. Mix once, cut into cubes, drop a cube into the colony, leave for a few days, replace as needed.

Calcium fortified at 4% minimum. Standard cricket food has minimal calcium. Bug Burger has substantial calcium content built in, making the insects you feed to your reptiles or amphibians far more nutritious without needing to dust them with calcium powder before feeding (though dusting is still recommended for serious herp keepers).

Plant-based, wholesome ingredients. Stabilized rice bran, corn meal, alfalfa leaf meal, brewer's dried yeast, dried kelp, ground flaxseed, dried watermelon, rose hips, cinnamon, hibiscus, marigold, paprika, turmeric. Closer to natural insect diets than highly processed feed pellets.

Carotenoid pigments. Beta carotene, paprika, turmeric, marigold and calendula flowers contribute natural carotenoids. These pass through to feeder insects and onwards to the animals consuming them — useful for reptiles where colour expression depends partly on carotenoid intake.

Cost-effective. A 3oz tub makes 1.25lbs of finished gel. For cricket or roach colonies, this lasts a serious feeder operation for weeks. For invertebrate hobbyists using it as a supplement, a single tub can last months.

Long shelf life when prepared. Refrigerator storage for up to 2 weeks, freezer for up to 6 months. Make a large batch, freeze portions individually, and pull out cubes as needed — much easier than daily fresh food preparation.

Which Animals Benefit?

Feeder insect colonies. Bug Burger's primary use case. Anyone breeding crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, or other feeders for reptiles or amphibians benefits from the simplified maintenance and nutritional consistency.

Cockroaches as pets. Species in our cockroach collection readily consume Bug Burger as their primary food. For ornamental species kept as display animals (rather than as feeders), Bug Burger provides complete nutrition without the variability of fresh vegetables.

Isopods. Hardy and prolific species like Porcellio scaber and Giant Orange (P. laevis) respond well to Bug Burger as a supplementary food. The calcium content is particularly valuable for fast-breeding colonies where regular moulting demands consistent calcium availability. Premium species — Cubaris, Ardentiella, and others — also accept it readily.

Millipedes. Larger species in our millipede collection benefit from occasional Bug Burger as supplementary food, particularly for the calcium content. Place a small piece on the substrate; millipedes will graze on it over a day or two.

Springtails. Springtail cultures respond strongly to Bug Burger. Crumble a small piece on the substrate or sprinkle the dry powder; springtails will swarm to it.

Bug Burger vs Morning Wood — Which to Use?

If you're already using Repashy Morning Wood for your invertebrates, you might wonder whether Bug Burger is worth adding. Here's the difference:

  • Morning Wood: Designed specifically for isopods, springtails, and detritivores. Higher fibre (50% max), 20% protein, formulated around cellulose-rich detritivore needs.
  • Bug Burger: Designed primarily for feeder insects (crickets, roaches). Lower fibre (10% max), 13% protein, formulated for general insect nutrition with strong calcium fortification.

For pure isopod and millipede keeping, Morning Wood is the more biologically appropriate choice. For cockroach colonies, cricket and roach feeder breeding, or mixed setups where you want one supplement that works for both feeders AND cleanup crew, Bug Burger is more versatile.

Many serious keepers use both — Morning Wood for premium isopod colonies, Bug Burger for cockroach colonies and as a backup all-purpose food.

How to Prepare and Use

Standard gel preparation:

  1. Mix 1 part powder with no more than 3 parts boiling water (using more water causes the gel to fail to set)
  2. Stir until smooth
  3. Pour into mould or container
  4. Let cool to room temperature until firm
  5. Cut into cubes, slabs, or shredded pieces

Important: Do NOT use more than 3 parts water — overhydration prevents the gel from setting properly. This is one of the few common preparation mistakes with Bug Burger.

Powder feeding: Bug Burger can also be sprinkled as dry powder directly into colonies. Many cricket and roach keepers prefer this method because it's faster than gel preparation, though you'll then need to provide a separate water source.

Storage: Treat finished gel as fresh food. Refrigerator: up to 2 weeks. Freezer: up to 6 months. Many keepers prepare a large batch, freeze in cube-sized portions, and use as needed.

Feeding frequency:

  • Feeder colonies: Replace gel cubes every 2–3 days, or as soon as they show signs of drying out or being eaten down
  • Pet cockroaches: Once or twice weekly as primary food, supplemented with fresh vegetables and protein
  • Isopods and millipedes: Once or twice weekly as a supplementary food, alongside their primary leaf litter and rotting wood diet
  • Springtails: Sprinkle small amounts as needed

Composition

Ingredients: Stabilized Rice Bran, Corn Meal, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Alfalfa Leaf Meal, Ground Flaxseed, Cane Molasses, Calcium Carbonate, Dried Seaweed Meal, Lecithin, Locust Bean Gum, Dried Kelp, Dried Watermelon, Rose Hips, Cinnamon, Hibiscus Flower, Marigold Flower, Paprika, Turmeric, Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate, Salt, Calcium Propionate and Potassium Sorbate (preservatives), plus a comprehensive chelated mineral package and vitamin supplement.

Guaranteed analysis:

  • Crude protein: minimum 13%
  • Crude fat: minimum 4%
  • Crude fibre: maximum 10%
  • Moisture: maximum 8%
  • Ash: maximum 18%
  • Calcium: minimum 4%

Vitamins: A, D3, E, C (as Calcium L-Ascorbyl-2-Monophosphate), niacin, beta carotene, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, pyridoxine, thiamine, folic acid, biotin, B-12, menadione.

Trace minerals: Magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper (all in chelated forms for improved bioavailability).

An Important Note on Primary Diet

If you're using Bug Burger as a supplement for isopods or millipedes, remember that these animals still need their primary diet of dried leaf litter and decayed wood. Bug Burger doesn't replace natural detritus — it adds to it. Maintain a substrate-and-leaf-litter setup with proper [magnolia leaves](/products/large-magnolia-leaves-for-isopods), [bamboo leaf litter](/products/bamboo-leaf-litter), [flake soil](/products/flake-soil-1l), and rotting wood, and use Bug Burger as a periodic nutrient boost on top of that foundation.

For dedicated cockroach colonies and feeder insect operations, Bug Burger genuinely can serve as a complete diet — that's what it was designed for. Just remember to replace the gel before it dries out or moulds.

Great thowback to the OG Ironman, but Amazon's listing gets it undue negativity.

Amazon's listing is not very good with it's wording so this watch has gotten undue negative reviews. I've seen this model listed as both the Endure 30 and the Original 30 Shock, it has 1 alarm with 3 different modes (not 3 separate alarms), 200m WR, ISO shock resistance, (reverse) Indiglo with night mode, 2 time zones, 12/24hr time, 30 lap stopwatch, 24hr countdown timer (repeatable), and day/date (MM.DD or DD.MM). Its basically a slightly updated feature set compared to an Ironman 8-lap. This watch is great, it's got the look of the original Ironman 8-lap with modern guts. The only minus for me is it could be a little slimmer on the wrist, but I also didn't realize it was shock resistant when I bought it. For comparison, it is a few mm smaller in all dimensions than a G-Shock G2300/G2310/GW2310 series. The band is similar to G-Shocks in that it is formed/molded around the wrist but like the case it's still slimmer in the way it wears around the wrist. Not as slim as an F91W but not as massive as any G-Shock basically. The module has a better display with bigger numbers than the above mentioned Casios. With the exception of the lap memory, the G23## G-Shocks have more features, but the Endure 30 is much easier to use thanks to the display and larger buttons. If you want 3 alarms you need the very similar Classic 30. The main differences being the Classic has 3 separate alarms (not 1), occasion reminders and 3 time zones but losses the Ironman 8-lap look, the shock resistance and it's only 100m WR. The Classic seems to come in at least two case varieties (chunky or slim), two sizes and many color combinations. If you only need the Endure 30's features but want a different shape/size/style/slimmness, I believe the Essential 10/30 and BASIC Transit models are functionally the same with only different lap memories, WR, and no shock resistance. Unfortunately, Timex doesn't easily identify the actual module used in a watch like Casio, so the best way to figure out what features a watch has is to lookup the watch model on the Timex website. Of course the manuals do not always match the marketing names they have used over the years (Endure/Classic/Essential/etc), and each manual covers a few shapes/sizes of watch but just search for the model number in the manuals sections and you'll eventually find the right one. If no manual pops up right away delete digits from the right end of the model number until a manual is found, I believe those last digits only indicate slight variances in style/color that are not important to functionality.

Good interface but unwearable watch band

This review will be divided into 3 sections: looks, usability, and comfort. LOOKS I guess there's not much to say as style is very individual. I think this watch looks good for what you pay for it. USABILITY What I liked about this watch is that I could use it right out of the box. I have had basic Timex digital watches before (never this exact interface), and I was able to quickly figure it out. A quick glance at the manual to make sure I wasn't unaware of any features and I had 100% grasp of all the watch's features. The Timex interface puts many others to shame with its user-friendliness. On this model Timex has added a 'guide' on the display that tells you which button will do what-- increase number, decrease number, etc. This is cool. If you're even remotely handy with interfaces, once you learn this one, you'll know it backwards and forwards, and even if you forget, there's the in-display guide. The functions are standard for a Timex digital-- time and date, stopwatch with lap timing, countdown timer, and alarm. There is a 2nd time zone but no dedicated mode for it. You access it by holding the 'start' button when in the time mode. I like this feature as I occasionally need to know when to call people in 1 particular time zone. But, for example, if you are often switching back and forth between 2 time zones, you will have to reset the time to have the watch display the correct time at all times. And if you need more than 2 time zones, sorry, out of luck. Stopwatch (chrono) is good. Don't use the lap counter much but it seems to work well. Some have complained that the 'start' and 'stop' should be on the same button. Overall, it is a very uncluttered and usable interface. At first I thought it was very inaccurate at timekeeping, but it must have gotten accidentally reset because over the few months since I set it, it's only a couple seconds off from time.gov. very good timekeeping. It seems very water resistant. I have taken it swimming, surfing, and it held up fine. I haven't thoroughly tested its shock resistance but it has done some hiking and climbing where it got banged around a bit and it still works. COMFORT Unfortunately what the watch has in user interface usability, it totally lacks in comfort. The strap is a huge disaster. It is very rigid and uncomfortable. The 'waffling' or indented designs near the bezel on each side of the strap create areas where the strap digs into the wrist. with any prolonged wearing, it gets worse and worse until your wrist is begging you to take it off. The strap is just absolutely godawful. I have read reviews where G Shock owners said it was very good, well though out and comfortable. If that is the case, I shudder to imagine what a G Shock is like on the wrist. If constant pinching around sensitive areas on the side of the wrist seems like it would be the kind of thing to bother you, avoid this watch. I tried swapping it for another Timex band, which amazingly enough was uncomfortable it a DIFFERENT area! It seems Timex doesn't put much thought into their bands-- no part of the band should dig into the wrist. That's just obvious. CONCLUSION I really want to like this watch, I do. It's good-looking. It's very usable in terms of features. But the strap is terrible, so much so that the watch is unwearable. Unfortunately it took me about a week to figure this out, during which time the watch got sufficient wear so that it is no longer new, returnable condition. I am keeping it, using it as a 'beater' watch in the gym (I put my watch on the ground in the gym). If you purchase it I recommend you wear it for a good few hours while not doing anything that will scratch it, so that you can return it if need be.

Compared to g-shock?

Firstly random public reviews can be comical…”it’s has a battery, terrible, One star” or “I don’t like yellow, one star” omg peoples do better. I’ll review this while comparing to an older style of g-shock from the same era. I’ll start by saying this timex rocks, for me in my mid 50’s it’s so retro and nastalgic, brings back memories, I may have even owned this model back in the day. What’s great about it- the display, larger digits than the typical g-shock and they are super crisp, clear and easy to read. The indiglo is awesome. This is the most accurate quartz watch I have aside from the atomic g-shocks that adjust themselves daily. I prefer a chunky watch and the g-shocks do a better job in that department. i feel this watch is rugged, but I’d still give the nod to g-shock in this department. 200M water resistance is the gold standard and this watch has it which I love for peace of mind for any water based activities. This is a 5 star watch at a great price. I still love some aspects of a g-shock better but its just preference.

I'm not a Timex fanboy, and I've had my fair share of problems with the Expedition line, so this review is my honest opinion as a man who's worn Armitrons and Timexes since I was 10. I remember in 1992 when the Timex Ironman Triathlon with Indiglo was first launched - My older brother got one, then me and my neighbor friends. Everybody loved the high-tech style and amazing functionality. Even Bill Clinton was rock'n this watch, for those who don't remember. Quite simply, this is the perfect watch at a great price, in my opinion. Perfect as a gift for any man, and I think the original black/olive drab/yellow coloration is still the coolest. In this day and age of smartphones, it still pays to have this watch. The alarm is less annoying sounding than a cellphone, and doesn't wake up the entire house. To turn it off, just tap the watch, no more reaching for the phone or alarm clock. Timer comes in handy for anything; timing my kids' timeouts when they get in trouble, 15 minutes room clean-up times, etc. Chrono is fun for anything you wanna use a stop-watch for. I set the second time zone for Vietnam time. It really is a million times easier to use this watch for all of its functions than reaching for a smartphone or alarm clock, etc. If you;ve been relying on your phone for a few years as a watch/chronograph/timer/alarm - you'll be so glad you finally got a watch like this. I've never tried a smart-watch, however I feel those are not as necessary,durable or practical as a real watch. Other Timex watches I've used were freakin' trash - couldn't throw em away fast enough. Might as well open the box while holding it over a trash can, so the watch can fall right in when you open the box. That's my experience with the Expedition line-up. Back to this watch: The only thing I wish this watch could do is measure activity thermogenesis (calories expended throught the day) or work as a pedometer, which some smart-watches and other devices can do. I also cannott decide if I like this new, slightly larger, heavier/thicker design of the Ironman Triathlon over the 1990s design. The 90s models styling was "tight to death'. Star-split buttons were seperated. The mode button was yellow. Overall more compact and bi-cultural;by that I mean it looked great as an athletic watch or a politician, business man wathc. This new model is bigger, better ingress/shock resistance, and more of an athletic style over all, and is a little less colorful. I almost went with the G-shocks, but they still just look like crap and are waay to expensive. Sure, they have some better features, can survive WWIII, but I am a traveler. I need a watch that can work in the dark in any environment. The G-shocks are often using some kind of solar battery crap and rely on cathing a signal from an American automic clock in Colorado - good luck with that while your in Thailand on vacation.

This is the third running watch I've had and it's my first Timex. I've owned to Casio's before (one being a g-shock), but after finding my g-shock to bulky and cluttered, and loosing my other Casio I picked up from Walmart, I decided to look around to find a new durable running watch. I run cross country and track so going from a generic stopwatch to a 30-lap chrono watch has been sweet. The lap timer is easy to use and the display is big enough to take a glance and see my split and total time side by side. The recall feature works perfectly and you even have some room to adjust the settings to configure your lap display how you like it. My favorite thing about this Timex, is its ease of use. The only time I've had to look at a manual is when I first got the watch. The display updates as you go through the various modes to show you what the new buttons mean so there is never a question on how to set the time or recall your laps. This watch is extremely durable. It has already taken a few shots and I've swam with it on several times. The screen and body have held up nicely and I don't foresee any problems with them in the future. The strap is great also. I really like the notch that keeps the excess strap in place. The countdown timer and the alarm both work as expected. The timer has some different settings and is easy to set up. My only disappointment with the timer was that you can't set different intervals. Like if you want to run for five minutes and walk for two your going to have to invest a little more for a watch that allows different intervals. The alarm works well too, and the beeping successfully wakes me up in the morning, but I'm not a heavy sleeper so some may find it too quiet. Overall this watch is durable, easy to use, and can track splits really well. The watch is a little bulky if you are used to a more minimalist watch but for me the weight was perfect, and for the price you can't go wrong with this watch.
