The single-root cup — pure cut ginger root pieces, the kitchen-cupboard ingredient that drinks well alone.
Ginger — the dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale — has been cooking and brewing in kitchens across Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. The dried, cut root is one of the most versatile single-ingredient teas you can keep on the shelf: it brews into a clean spicy cup on its own, blends with anything you put it next to, and stretches a kettle of plain hot water into something with character.
Sampson sells it as the simple cut root — nothing blended, nothing added. Brew it alone for a clean spicy cup, or use it as a base to combine with lemon, honey, mint or any tea on the shelf. The same bag works in cooking too: a teaspoon thrown into a soup or a stir-fry adds the same warmth without grating fresh ginger.

Tasting Notes
Sharp Spicy Top
Aroma
Strong, clean, slightly peppery — the smell of fresh-cut root, not candied ginger candy. The aroma carries across the kitchen the moment hot water hits the cup.
Warm Building Body
Body
The warmth builds gradually rather than spiking on the first sip. Cut root brews a slower cup than powder — round in the middle, warm rather than burning.
Long Peppery Finish
Aftertaste
Closes warm and faintly peppery — the heat hangs in the throat for a few seconds longer than most teas. Naturally sweet underneath, no sugar required.
How to Brew
Measure
One heaped teaspoon (about 2–3g) per 8oz cup. The pieces are dense — a level scoop is enough for a softer cup, heaped for a stronger one.
Heat the Water
Bring water to a full boil — 100°C / 212°F. Real ginger root needs real heat to release.
Steep 5–7 Minutes
Cover the cup. Five for softer warmth, seven for full spicy body. Re-steeps once more — the second pour is gentler but still distinctly ginger.

5–7 min
Per Cup
1 heaped tsp
Add a slice of fresh lemon and a small spoon of honey for the classic ginger-lemon-honey winter cup. Or brew with mint leaves for a North-African-style sweet ginger glass. Or save the bag for the soup pot — same root works in either.
About the Tea
Ginger Root
The Whole Cup
The dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale — the kitchen-spice ginger that has cooked across Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean for millennia. Cut, not ground, so the cup brews properly and the heat builds gradually rather than dumping all at once.
Cut, Not Powdered
The Process
Cut root pieces hold their character through a long steep, can re-steep once or twice, and don’t cloud the cup the way ginger powder does. The visible pieces are a small honest signal: this is real root, not flavour.
Tea or Kitchen Use
The Versatility
Brews well alone, blends with almost any other tea or herb, and works in the kitchen — soups, stir-fries, rice, marinades. One bag, two functions, the same root behind both.
In the tin
Cut ginger root (Zingiber officinale).
Origin & Sourcing
Pure cut ginger root — single ingredient, no blend. The dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale, the kitchen-spice ginger of South Asia and the Middle East. Caffeine-free, naturally gluten-free, packed in small batches for the Sampson shelf.
