The Story behind "Rudo"

Inspired by Jedidah’s childhood in Zimbabwe, Runako reflects the journey from questioning beauty standards to embracing identity, heritage, and self-acceptance. Growing up in a post-colonial society where lighter skin and straighter hair were often idealised, the artwork became a personal exploration of what true beauty really means. Influenced by the graffiti tunnels of Waterloo Station and layered with African fabric, inks, texture, florals, and handwritten affirmations, this Black woman artwork celebrates beauty that comes from within. Through expressive mixed media techniques and symbolic storytelling, Runako becomes more than a portrait — it is a powerful reminder of resilience, self-love, and the beauty found in authenticity.
