Ariadne, Princess of Crete and daughter of the fearsome King Minos, grows up hearing stories of gods and heroes. But beneath the golden palace something else stirs, the hoofbeats and bellows echoing from the Labyrinth below. Every year its captive, the Minotaur - Ariadne's brother - demands blood.

When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives as a sacrifice to the beast, Ariadne sees in him her chance to escape. But helping Theseus kill the monster means betraying her family and country, and Ariadne knows only too well that drawing the attention of the mercurial gods may cost her everything.

In a world where women are nothing more than the pawns of powerful men, will Ariadne's decision to risk everything for love ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover's ambition?

ARIADNE gives a voice to the forgotten women of one of the most famous Greek myths. Beautifully written and completely immersive, this exceptional debut novel is

'What happens after the monster is defeated and the princess leaves with the hero? Jennifer Saint's Ariadne is a shimmering tapestry of two sisters bound by deceit and the shadows of family history. One marries a hero, the other a god. As their lives criss-cross through girlhood and womanhood, the secrets that their husbands keep become a monstrous backdrop to their relationship. With a fresh voice and keen insight, Saint adds flesh and bone to an ancient myth, drawing the reader into an uneasy world of ever-afters.' - Yangsze Choo, New York Times bestselling author of THE NIGHT TIGER

'An ancient story of love and sisterhood reimagined, Jennifer Saint's ARIADNE is a truly masterful debut - compulsive, absorbing and lyrical. Saint breathes new life into the forgotten women of Greek mythology with a novel that's both incredibly absorbing, and full of heart.' - Katie Lowe, author of THE FURIES

'In ARIADNE, Jennifer Saint places women centre stage. It is a beautiful exploration of the bond of sisterhood, the challenges of womanhood and the desire to forge one's own destiny in a world dominated by the will of heroes and gods. Utterly absorbing and brought to life in lyrical prose, ARIADNE is a joy from start to finish.' - Elizabeth Lee, author of CUNNING WOMEN

'Saint's enchanting debut retells the myth of the minotaur through the eyes of Ariadne . . . As the women navigate their changing positions of power, they court disaster at the hands of both gods and men. Saint expertly highlights how often the women of this world pay the price for the actions of the men around them. Lovers of mythology should snap this up.' - Publishers Weekly

Excellent resource for defending why Christianity is not rooted in mythology
Format: Paperback
I bought this book as required reading for an introductory Old Testament class I was taking in seminary. Sad to say, the textbook mostly collects dust. To this day, I use Oswalt's book for reference and continue to recommend the reading of it to others. I do not believe one can fully defend the Christian faith without first knowing how firmly convinced some scholars and historians are that Christianity is rooted in mythology. I will not lie. If you read about some of these myths in a silo, you may find yourself leaning toward such false beliefs. When you take a step back and consider the time in history in which the Old Testament was written, the picture becomes more clear. In the introduction to the Old Testament class, we also read Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament by John H. Walton. Again, the text book is mostly collecting dust, I also repeatedly use this one as a reference. I would strongly recommend reading both books. The second is more academic in style than the first, but it helps lend further context.

An inspiring take on the story of the Bible and reality.
Format: Kindle
This was an absolute pleasure to read. Oswalt utilizes his knowledge of ancient near east culture and religion to thorough debunk any effort to one might make to pretend that the Bible is of a similar mythology.

Is the Bible Really Unique?
Format: Kindle
Oswalt takes up the question of the uniqueness of the Christian Bible by focusing on the Old Testament (which is also the holy book of the Jews) and its similarities and differences to the myths of the periods in which it was put together. His comparison and contrast make for very interesting reading. He allows the two world views to stand alone, allowing the reader to understand his conclusions without forcing him/her to agree with the author. In reading this book, I also began to notice some very interesting parallels between the ancient worldview of "continuity" (versus the biblical view that Oswalt calls "transcendence") and some modern views being espoused in the Western world. Definitely worth a read whether or not you agree with him. It will help broaden your view both of your view and of the other side's view.

Good Core Content but I won't read it again
Format: Kindle
This book makes a strong stand for the position that the Bible does not fit within the genre of myth. That is the positive aspects of this work. However, this book at times seems somewhat philosophical, it can be hard to follow the author's logic, and it does not adequately cover one of the most fundamental questions the author poses. For example, the question of whether the theology of the Bible should receive special credence if the historical basis it rests on is found to be incorrect is asked, but the answer given is short and does not fully interact with the question which I found to be very disappointing.
