De ik-verteller was de laatste die de man in leven zag en kan niet aan de verleiding weerstaan om het onderzoek van nabij te volgen – zelfs als hij daarvoor de luimen van inspecteur Asbjørn Krag moet verdragen. De inspecteur komt uit Kristiana (het huidige Oslo) en brengt behalve een scherpe blik ook een onderkoeld gevoel voor humor mee.

Al gauw gaat de verbeelding van de verteller, de Kapitein Hastings van dienst, met hem op de loop. Heeft hij ’s nachts echt een rinkelen van kettingen gehoord? Heeft het iets te maken met de lokale legende over een spookachtige ijzeren wagen? He is not a destructive chewer but whips them around, tramples on them, steps on them while running top speed and chomps on the annoying squeaker for hours. one squeaker has a hole and its tune is now slightly muted (thank god)
