Als we spreken over iconische wijnen dan hebben we het natuurlijk over Chateau Belgrave uit de wijnstreek Haut Medoc. Dit prachtige klassieke wijnhuis behoort tot de 5e Grand Cru Classé uit 1855. En dat is enkel weggeld voor de allerbeste wijnen van Frankrijk. Maar dat is niet vanzelf gegaan want Chateau Belgrave heeft ontzettend veel kennis opgedaan over de rijke bodem structuren en de aanplanting van de druiven soorten. Het wijnhuis is van oorsprong een zeer gereputeerd jachtpaviljoen waarbij onder leiding van Lodewijk XV werd uitgebreid met diverse wijngaarden. De aanduiding "Bellegrave" verscheen voor het eerst in 1845, toen Bruno Devès, een handelaar in Bordeaux, het landgoed verbouwde en de wijnbouw op de beste grind terroirs ging verbeteren. Hij verbouwde de wijngaarden en hij maakte een nieuwe wijnmakerij en van het jachtpaviljoen een prachtig woonhuis. Dit is vandaag de dag nog steeds zo en de wijnen zijn sinds 1855 bestempeld met de classificatie 5e Grand Cru Classé. Uniek zo kunnen wij het wel noemen!

Houtlagering voor de Chateau Belgrave Haut Medoc

Sinds 1979 behoort het grote wijnhuis bij de familie Dourthe. En dat is geen onbekende op het gebeid van top wijnen uit Frankrijk. In totaal heeft Chateau Belgrave 59 hectare aan wijngaarden verdeelt over de wijnstreek Haut Medoc. De bodem structuur bestaat vooral uit kiezels, klei en kalk waardoor de druiven soorten Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Petit Verdot het perfect doen. Deze rode wijn bestaat voor drie kwart uit Cabernet Sauvignon en geeft zijn stempel aan deze krachtige rode wijn. Alle trossen groeien op in een perfect leefklimaat waarbij de zon haar werk kan doen en de frisse wind vanaf de Gironde rivier de juiste verkoeling geeft. De rivier heeft een belangrijke invloed op de wijnen uit de Haut Medoc. Deze zorgt voor krachtige bodem structuren en geeft de oogst alles wat nodig is. Alle trossen worden met de hand geoogst en dan is een zeer grote klus. Erg zorgvuldig haalt men enkel de beste trossen binnen waardoor vanaf het eerste moment een toon wordt gezet op deze rode Chateau Belgrave. Puur, zuiver en krachtig.

Vol en zeer krachtig deze Chateau Belgrave Haut Medoc

De druiven worden geperst en gekneusd waarna deze rode wijn maar liefst twaalf maanden rijpt op eikenhouten vaten. Van de gebruikte vaten is ongeveer 35 procent ongebruikt en dat geeft meer kracht en souplesse aan deze rode wijn. Zoals de eigenaar Frédéric Bonnaffous zegt een mooiere en klassiekere Haut Medoc bestaat er niet. Daar geven wij hem gelijk in en het feest begint al bij het open maken van de fles. Zodra de kurk van de fles is geeft hij ons een warm gevoel van zwart fruit met daarbij lichte kruiden en wat tonen van tabak en cederhout. Bij het inschenken van deze wijn krijgen we een warm gevoel van binnen, de zwarte kleur geeft aan dat dit een wijn is om nooit meer te vergeten. Geurend naar specerijen, zwart fruit, cacao, vanille en cederhout. In de mond een zeer warme wijn met veel diversiteit, rijkdom van zwart fruit met daarbij lichte kruiden zoals peper, kruidnagel en laurier. De finale met veel dikke indrukken van chocolade, pruimen en bessen. Wat een feest, een wijn waar we nog vaak aan zullen denken.

As a lifelong Angeleno, the dark history of the city is often glossed over. Much like Chavez Ravine, the history of Union Station is one of violence and the forced displacement of the original Chinatown and its residents. It's in this setting where the mysterious death of Chinese actress Lulu Wong (who is somewhat based on the real life of actress Anna Mae Wong) begins, and took me into the lives of the amazing Chow sisters - May and Gemma - both of whom have their own reasons for wanting justice. They know the LA cops won't bother to solve the death of a Chinese woman, no matter how famous. It's also a matter of saving their beloved Chinatown from being destroyed in order to build Union Station. I absolutely loved how immersive this story felt and how authentic all of the characters were.

The girls know that the police won't look too hard into the murder, so they decide to take matters into their own hands. As they investigate, the sisters discover a plot to frame Chinatown as a den of iniquity that should be demolished in favor of constructing a new train station. May and Gemma soon find themselves in a race against time to not only find justice for their friend but save their neighborhood, all while being targeted by a killer. I've only read a few books by Lee, but they've all been winners. I love her style when it comes to YA historical fiction. She crafts compelling plotlines that include real issues of the time with characters you can't help but root for. I liked both our main characters. May was more logical and reserved, while Gemma was a spitfire, but they balanced each other perfectly. I liked how we got both of their POVs, but I did enjoy Gemma's slightly more because I loved her gumption. I thought the mystery was well-paced and kept me intrigued. I had no clue how it would play out, and I liked how Lee wrapped it all up. It did drag a bit in the middle, but overall, I thought it was entertaining.
