Van de vulautomaat kan je ofwel met een vaste buis, ofwel met een gardena tuinslang naar je regenton gaan. De automaat is voorzien van een overloop: als de regenton vol zit, loopt het water gewoon door naar de riool in plaats van je regenton te doen overstromen.

De vulautomaat kan je roteren naar 'open' en 'gesloten' positie: wil je bijvoorbeeld je regenton kuisen, kan je gewoon de vulautomaat in gesloten positie zetten, waardoor het regenwater rechtstreeks doorloopt naar het riool. Als de regenton dan leeg is, kan je deze eenvoudig reinigen.

Het is steeds aangeraden om accessoires voor bladvang (zoals 'bladvanger voor uitloop' en 'roterende bladvanger') te gebruiken, zodat de vulautomaat niet verstopt geraakt met bladeren (of dat je regenton vol komt te zitten met bladeren).
