Man in het duister vertelt het verhaal van August Brill die inhet huis van zijn dochter herstelt van een auto-ongeluk. Hij kan de slaap niet vatten en dus vertelt hij zichzelf verhalen om niet te hoeven denken aan de dood van zijn vrouw en de verschrikkelijke moord op de vriend van zijn kleindochter.
