Zijn leven neemt een verbluffende wending wanneer hij aangenomen wordt als parkeercontroleur in Hilversum. Daar ontdekt hij dat hij eindelijk ergens in uitblinkt: het bekeuren van auto’s. Parkeren in Hilversum is een tragikomische schets van het Gooi en van woedende, scheldende en liegende autobezitters. Maar bovenal is het een ode aan de vriendschap en de afhankelijkheid. Als repatriant blijft Detlev van Heest uiteindelijk op de been dankzij het echtpaar Voskuil, dat zich over hem ontfermt als ware hij het verloren schaap. Het boek eindigt met de laatste maanden van het leven van J.J.
