Deze spinthout boom heeft als kenmerk een zeer duidelijke tekening. Het lichtgele taaie hout laat zich goed bewerken, maar is wel redelijk gevoelig voor werking. De nerf is grof, maar dat maakt juist de tekening zo fraai. Door de taaiheid en buigsterkte van deze soort zijn er tal van specifieke toepassingen.  Het kernhout is donker van kleur en wordt door velen als inferieur beschouwd.

Amerikaans Essen heeft ongeveer dezelfde eigenschappen als Europees Essen. Het blankste Essen komt uit de staat Georgia in de Verenigde Staten. Toch zijn er een paar verschillen: zo is het Europees Essen milder en heeft een meer verfijnde structuur.
