Pyriet, vaak bekend als "fool's gold" vanwege zijn goudachtige glans, is een veel voorkomend sulfidemineraal.  Pyriet kristalliseert in het kubische kristalstelsel en vormt vaak goed gevormde kubussen, octaëdervormige en pyritoëdrale kristallen. Het kan ook voorkomen als massieve en korrelige aggregaten. Pyriet is kenmerkend metaalachtig goudkleurig met een groenachtig tot zwarte streep. Het heeft een sterke glans en is opaak. Het heeft een hardheid van ongeveer 6 tot 6,5 op de Mohs-schaal, wat het vrij hard maakt. Pyriet is ook zwaar vanwege het hoge ijzergehalte.  Pyriet wordt vaak aangetroffen in sedimentaire, metamorfe en stollingsgesteenten en is een veelvoorkomend mineraal in hydrothermale aderen. Het is ook aanwezig in fossiele afzettingen en kan als een secundair mineraal in steenkoolbedden voorkomen.

Groeivormen:
Pyritoëdrische Kristallen: Deze zijn complexer en vertegenwoordigen een unieke vorm binnen het kubische systeem, waarbij de kristallen twaalf vijfhoekige vlakken hebben. Pyritoëdrie is zeldzaam en zeer gewild bij verzamelaars.

Kubische Kristallen: De meest kenmerkende vorm van pyriet is de kubusvorm. De kristallen zijn perfect kubisch met gladde vlakken en scherpe randen.

Octaëdrische Kristallen: Minder vaak voorkomend dan de kubische vorm, maar pyriet kan ook in octaëdervorm kristalliseren. Deze kristallen hebben acht gelijkzijdige driehoekige vlakken.

Sferische Vormen (Stralenkransen): Soms groeit pyriet in sferische aggregaten van stralende kristallen die vanuit een gemeenschappelijk centrum uitwaaieren. Deze vormen kunnen een textuur hebben die lijkt op een zon of zeester.

Fractale Groei en Dendritische Structuren: In sommige gevallen kan pyriet dendritische structuren vormen die eruitzien als kleine takjes of fractale patronen, vaak gevonden in scheuren van fossiele schalen of binnen andere gesteenten.

Massieve en Klonterige Vormen: Naast goed gedefinieerde kristallen kan pyriet ook voorkomen in massieve, klonterige of ingebedde vormen die geen zichtbare kristalvlakken hebben.
