Symboliek en achtergrond

De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 2 december 1971, de dag waarop de VAE werd opgericht. Groen staat voor groei en welvaart, wit voor vrede en neutraliteit, zwart symboliseert kracht en overwinning, en rood verwijst naar moed en de opofferingen van eerdere generaties. De vier kleuren zijn gezamenlijk ook een uitdrukking van de pan-Arabische eenheid.
