Om het vijftienjarig bestaan van het Tuschinski-theater in Amsterdam luister bij te zetten, besloot Abraham Tuschinski het publiek van de crisisjaren op een komedie te trakteren. Voor de regie werd de Duitse emigrant Max Ophüls aangetrokken, regisseur van stijlvolle films als Die verkaufte Braut (1932) en Liebelei (1933). Van Komedie om geld - over een bankbediende die een man in bonus wordt - maakte hij een pakkende vertelling, voorzien van een licht moraliserende Brechtiaanse commentaarstem. De film werd geprezen om zijn onhollandse allure, het briljante camerawerk en het ingeleefd acteren. Vooral de negentienjarige Rini Otte en ervaren rot Herman Bouber maakten indruk. Can't beat the 8 ounce sprays.
