Alleen deze Vijgen soorten zijn namelijk zeer geschikt voor ons klimaat en zullen strengere winter eerder overleven. Deze bomen zijn vergelijkbaar met de Olijfbomen. Misschien niet vanwege de vorm of vruchten, maar vanwege het Mediterrane gevoel dat ze geven! Deze prachtige boom- heestersoorten zijn familie familie van de Moraceae. De bloemkleur is groen en de bloeitijd is van ca. juni. De bladeren zijn groen. De volwassen hoogte van deze grote heester is ca. 3-4 meter. Verdraagt een temperatuur tot -12 graden Celsius. Ga voor een vijgenboompje op stam indien u wat minder ruimte heeft. Deze blijven over het algemeen wat kleiner, omdat de stam zelf minder groeit. Vruchten en oogstmaand

Vijgen groeien opvallende en heerlijke vruchten. De Brown Turkey soort geeft niet de lekkerste vruchten, er zijn soorten waarbij de vruchten lekkerder zijn, maar deze zijn minder geschikt voor ons klimaat. Rond augustus en september zijn de vruchten rijp om geplukt te worden.

Aanplanting Vijgenboom - Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey'

De Vijgenbomen vragen een gemiddelde tuingrond. Dus niet te zware klei of te lichte zandgrond. Korte periodes van droogte worden goed verdragen door de plant. De grond dient bij voorkeur een beetje vochtig te zijn. Ze staan graag op een plekje in de zon of lichte schaduw. Ze doen het goed in potten en plantenbakken. Deze struiken zijn geschikt voor verse bemeste tuinaarde van verhoogde borderbakken. Ook voor mensen zonder groene vingers. Vragen weinig onderhoud.
