Hoewel Franse filosofen als Foucault en Derrida het ik in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw doodverklaarden, leeft het nog altijd voort. Wel lijken zich door de komst van het internet – via Twitter, blogs en digitale vriendennetwerken – verschuivingen voor te doen in de manier waarop het ik zich manifesteert. Al zijn de huidige verschuivingen nog moeilijk te duiden, het wordt al wel duidelijk dat het ik niet iets stabiels is. Dankzij technische innovaties en culturele en maatschappelijke omwentelingen kan het ik veranderen. De huidige veranderingen zijn dan ook zeker niet de eerste die er in de westerse houding ten opzichte van het ik optreden. Aan de hand van egodocumenten als dagboeken, autobiografieën, memoires en brieven (geschreven tussen omstreeks 1500 en 1850 in het gebied dat we nu Nederland noemen) neemt Peter Buijs de lezer mee op een ontdekkingsreis naar de geboorte van het moderne ik. Een ik dat zich vanaf omstreeks 1650 begint te ontworstelen aan het christelijke denken over ziel en lichaam, en vanaf 1750 steeds sterker verbonden raakt met het streven naar aards geluk.

Absolutely Not Nonsense
Format: Hardcover
At first glance, this book might be mistaken for "Chariots of the Gods" hokum -- it's about pyramids, it suggest prehistoric connections between widely scattered civilizations, and it has an entire chapter on planetary catastrophes. However, this is a very serious effort. Granted, it raises a lot more questions than it answers, and can be a little monotonous in spots. But as a former geology major, I didn't spot any pseudo-science (which is not surprising, given that the primary author has a Ph.D. in Geology from Yale) and I found much food for thought. Sure, if it turns out that the whole theory of cultural diffusion is wrong, (similarities in disparate civilizations are due to migration and interconnection rather than parallel developoment) this book will be little more than an amusing footnote in the history of science. But then, plate tectonics was once a crackpot theory. This is a serious book that deserves to be read.
