traumahelikopter blijft wat dit betreft standvastig in zijn essentie. Het eigenzinnige trio uit Groningen Noord leunt al meer dan tien jaar op een van de meest pure fundamenten van een band: vriendschap. Zanger/gitarist Mark van der Ploeg, gitarist Daan van Dalen en drummer Roel van Berloo schrijven liedjes die spreken tot de herrieschopper vooraan in de pit, maar evengoed tot de introverte zwever achterin de zaal.

Deze twee uitersten komen mooier dan ooit samen op de door van Dalen geproduceerde vierde langspeler Save Yourself, die 20 januari 2023 verschijnt bij Excelsior Recordings. Een poëtische datum: het is precies 10 jaar nadat het titelloze debuut van de band in 2013 een verpletterende indruk maakte op internationale schaal.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.
