De Omega-3 index meet het percentage omega-3-vetzuren eicosapentaeen- en docosahexaeenzuur in het totale vetzuurgehalte in het bloed. Tot de essentiële cardio-protectieve eigenschappen van omega-3 vetzuren behoort de daling van de triglyceridenspiegel en eveneens een toename van HDL-cholesterol-waarden. Omega-3-vetzuren verlagen de bloeddruk verwijden de kleine bloedvaten belemmeren de samenklontering van trombocyten en verbeteren de vloeibaarheid van het bloed.
