De basis van de Pinot Noir, oftewel Spatburgunder, ligt in de Bourgogne. Via verschillende omwegen heeft de Duitse variant zich definitief gevestigd in de wijnvelden van het prachtige wijngebied Pfalz, in het Zuid-Westen van Duitsland. De wijnvelden van Ellermann Spiegel zijn hierin geen uitzondering. De druiven gedijen perfecte door het ideale terroir en klimaat.

De ideale weersomstandigheden voor Spatburgunder

Wijnhuis Ellermann Spiegel is gelegen in het zuidelijkste puntje van de Pfalz. Op deze plek profiteren de druiven van een uniek microklimaat. In de zomer is het overwegend warm en zonnig. In het westen van het wijnbouwgebied beschermt het Haardtgebergte de druiven in de winter tegen koude oostenwind en houdt dit gebergte in de zomer de warmte vast. Hierdoor kunnen de druiven optimaal rijpen. In 2007 nam Frank Spiegel de ongeveer 48 hectare wijngaard over van zijn stiefvader Harald Ellermann. Tot die tijd verkocht hij de wijn in vaten aan coöperaties. Ik korte tijd heeft Frank het bedrijf omgetoverd van bulkleverancier naar kwaliteitshuis met eigen bottelingen. Met succes brengen zij de wijnen van Ellermann-Spiegel sinds drie jaar op de Nederlandse markt. De druiven worden met de hand geplukt. Rijping gedurende twaalf maanden op houten vaten en roestvrijstalen tanks.

De typisch karakteristieke geur van Spatburgunder

Trek deze wijn open en het eerste wat je opvalt is de typische, karakteristieke geur die alleen een Spatburgunder kan hebben. De kenmerkende geur van kruidigheid in combinatie met bosfruit en kersen, prikkelt meteen je zintuigen. Deze Ellermann Spiegel bevat barstensvol fruit. Kersen, kersen en nog eens kersen. In combinatie met het aangename bittertje past deze Ellermann Spiegel Spatburgunder prima bij Oosterse gerechten of pittig gekruide kipgerechten. If anyone has mastered the political economy and geography of prisons in California, it is Ruth Wilson Gilmore in Golden Gulag. Gilmore does a great job of discussing and parceling out the very complex and complicated relationships that exist between capitalism as a system that produces our material world alongside economic crises, and the function of prisons to absorb, manage, relocate and "hide" those very crises in the era of neoliberalism. She also skillfully reminds us over and over that it is black and brown working-class poor communities that bear the brunt of this kind of system that also expresses it's power via white supremacy. I am finding this book very useful and chock-full of interesting information for my current research. People may find the book a difficult read because it loaded with information and technicalities they are unfamiliar with, but these are good reasons to struggle with a text and truly grasp the increasingly intricate processes that determine and guide the world we live in (and the places we may end up locked in!). As Marx said, there is no royal road to science and knowledge.
