Sparrow draagt een zware last met zich mee: ze geeft zichzelf de schuld van het overlijden van haar broertje Carver. Haar moeder Delilah bevestigt haar schuldgevoel door haar verantwoordelijk te houden voor de gebeurtenissen rondom Carvers traumatische dood.

Als de thuissituatie voor Sparrow onhoudbaar wordt, zoekt ze troost bij haar Amish-buurvrouw Emma en bouwt ze een vriendschap op met Emma’s zoon John. Emma heeft intussen haar eigen problemen in haar huwelijk en met de opvoeding van John, waardoor ze geïsoleerd raakt van de Amish-gemeenschap.

Alle drie ondervinden ze moeite door ras, religie en hun persoonlijke problemen. Toch gloort er hoop aan de horizon als ze hun geheimen prijsgeven en bouwen aan herstel, vriendschap en geluk.
