Als ze de kerstdagen doorbrengt bij een oude vriendin van haar moeder, ontmoet ze de aantrekkelijke en fascinerende Thomas Everly die, gedreven door zijn toewijding aan sociale gerechtigheid, onder Mexicaanse landarbeiders werkt in een kamp ten oosten van Los Angeles. Samen met Thomas ziet Ruth een andere kant van de stad en een andere kant van de realiteit: de veelvuldige gedwongen deportaties van Mexicanen en Amerikaanse burgers van Mexicaanse afkomst. Nadat Ruth noodgedwongen met haar studie gestopt is, gaat ze bij Thomas op bezoek en ziet dat hij op eigen houtje een avondschool voor de kinderen van de landarbeiders heeft opgezet. Ruth begint deze kinderen te helpen en ontwikkelt diepgaande vriendschappen met mensen in het kamp. Als het kamp overvallen wordt en de arbeiders en hun gezinnen bijeengedreven en naar Mexico teruggevoerd worden, besluiten Ruth en Thomas voor de rechten van de arbeiders op te komen… en samen verder te gaan.Shipping Notes

A Book I Wish I Had Back Then

This is EXACTLY the sort of book I wish I had available to me when I was ready to leave home. I was filled with all sorts of braggadocio and I knew everything I needed to get out the door..............and then was introduced to the 'school of hard knocks'
From discovering how to budget and manage your money, to learning how to cook and eat healthy food, to figuring out how to start a career, this book has something to teach even the most well rounded youngster. These aren't in-depth discussions about every aspect of how to live your life, but these ARE a great starting point and with the knowledge provided here, and a little bit of common sense, you can survive early adulthood and move towards a more fulfilling life.
Life is a series of learned events, usually set it motion through observing the people we respect, but not everyone can be everywhere at once and this book can and does fill in a bit of this and a bit of that, often inspiring a conversation that will provide more opportunities to share life lessons and avoid some of the bumps and bruises life has to offer.
As a grandparent watching his oldest grandsons get ready to leave the nest, I found this book to be a helpful way to share my experiences in a way that goes well beyond "because I said so" and reaches into the 'how' and the 'why', even explaining the reasoning, all without seeming to meddle in their affairs.
Unlike childhood where you can stomp your feet, declare 'that's not fair' and receive an immediate 'do-over', real life doesn't offer that and it's best to be prepared for what life is going to bring you. This book does that.

life skills

This is a great book full of life skills. the opening up managing your money and budgeting. The book is full of 100 everyday life skills that we need in order to function. ones that we might not have been taught growing up. the most significant chapter for me was on the money and I had to deal with stress and anxiety.

Great boob!

I love this book I think everyone who is 18+ should get there hands on this it gives a lot of good tips and ones that you never thought about until you read the book. Overall I would totally recommend this book I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
