As I was smoking, the purifier automatically kicked into high gear, did its job and returned to the near silent setting. Awesome! The machine displays a number that corresponds with the current air quality and a light that changes from red to green, depending on the amount of particles in the air while the fan speed runs accordingly. This feature works well, smoking, cooking or anything that releases particles will instantly be detected. The build quality is on par with the more expensive unit that I have but honestly, I prefer this machine, regardless of price! During normal operation, you can barely hear it but it does get louder when the fan ramps up. On it’s higher setting, it is as loud as a box fan on medium speed and when the mooka goes max speed, it matches the sound level of a box fan set to high speed, if that helps.
