De laatste tijd wordt deze techniek meer en meer gebruikt om onbehandelbaar en ondraaglijk lijden tijdens de laatste levensfase te vermijden. In veel zorginstellingen wordt palliatieve sedatie echter ook als alternatief voor euthanasie opgedrongen. Bovendien verkiezen sommige artsen palliatieve sedatie boven euthanasie omdat zij hierdoor opnieuw aan zet zijn. Het merendeel van de sedaties gebeurt zonder medeweten van de patiënt, terwijl euthanasie enkel kan op uitdrukkelijk verzoek van de betrokkene.

Dit boek wikt de voor- en nadelen van palliatieve sedatie. Hoewel de patiënt door palliatieve sedatie ‘sociaal’ overlijdt, zijn er argumenten waarom palliatieve sedatie – net zoals euthanasie – ook levensverkortend is. The rubber part is very durable but the strings or ropes are not. Puppy is eating the strings and having a hard time pooping them out. Just cut them off close to the knots and watch for them to eat the strings they pull off.
