Lange verblijven in Frankrijk (waar hij zich in 1933 definitief moest vestigen) brachten hem in contact met de Franse avant-garde. Van 6 december 1926 tot eind januari 1927 bezocht hij Moskou, een bezoek waaraan wij zijn meest persoonlijke en openhartige geschrift danken: Dagboek uit Moskou. Het boek is een poging tot synthese van liefde en revolutie genoemd. Meedogenloos (ook tegenover zichzelf) beschrijft hij zijn plotselinge liefde voor Asja Lacis, die vurig in de revolutie en de toekomst gelooft; zijn verbeten pogen meer inzicht te verwerven in de werkelijke veranderingen die door de revolutie zijn veroorzaakt; de literaire verplichtingen die hij voor zijn vertrek op zich heeft genomen en hem dwingen het alledaagse straatleven in Moskou te beschrijven. Het resultaat is een uniek portret van een tussen hoop en afkeer heen en weer geslingerde intellectueel en een even uniek portret van Moskou in de jaren twintig.
