Szechuanpeper is een opvallende, winterharde struik die bekendstaat om zijn aromatische schillen, die in de Aziatische keuken veel worden gebruikt. De bessen hebben een fris-citrusachtig aroma en zorgen voor het kenmerkende tintelende, licht verdovende mondgevoel dat typisch is voor de Szechuan-keuken. Ze worden vaak gecombineerd met chilipepers voor de beroemde "mala"-smaak.

De struik vormt een luchtige kroon en kan 3-4 meter hoog worden. Hij is voorzien van sierlijke geveerde bladeren en opvallende doornen langs de takken. In de nazomer ontwikkelen zich de roodbruine vruchtjes die openbarsten en de zwarte zaadjes prijsgeven, het aromatische deel dat geoogst wordt is de droge schil.

Szechuanpeper is goed winterhard en gedijt op een zonnige, beschutte plek in goed doorlatende grond. Voor een rijke oogst is het aanbevolen om minstens twee planten te zetten (mannelijk en vrouwelijk), aangezien de soort tweehuizig is.

Tips en verzorging:

  • Aanplanten: doordat de boompjes geleverd worden in pot kunnen ze het hele jaar door geplant worden. Plant bij voorkeur in het najaar, dan is de bodem nog warm en vochtig waardoor de boompjes goed zullen inwortelen in de bodem. Planten die in het najaar geplant zijn hebben een beter ontwikkeld wortelstelsel dan planten die pas in het voorjaar geplant worden.

The first time I used this with my 9 month old Shepard mix, it was great. We used about 1/3 cup of her kibble and added the Nook to make it harder. It kept her working for 20-30 minutes. However, now that she knows how to remove the Nook, and stick her snout into the opening and lick up the kibble, it lasts about 5 minutes, and is no longer a challenge. Best treat toy ever! In the beginning of 2025 I bought this for my 12yr old Alaskan Malamute who loves puzzles and brain games. She loved it and played with it every day. It’s not too loud or too difficult for the dogs to play with. So far it has held up without being chewed apart. It’s good quality, great size (orange for large breeds) and honestly, worth every penny.
