Maak armoede illegaal! brengt orde in die verwarrende werkelijkheid. Het wil een aanzet zijn om grondig na te denken over een thema dat we denken te kennen. Het legt uit wat de plaats van armoede in de politieke en maatschappelijke orde is – niet alleen in Europa maar ook mondiaal –, hoe het thema wordt gebruikt om armoedebestrijding te omzeilen en hoe armoede, dag na dag, zelfs bewust wordt gecreëerd.

Onze hedendaagse wereld is een armoedefabriek. Als we in de sterk veranderende mondiale samenleving de oprukkende verrechtsing en militarisering geen kans willen bieden, moeten we terug naar de waarden van democratie, sociale rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit. Die werden na de Tweede Wereldoorlog wereldwijd hoog in het vaandel gedragen maar staan vandaag onder druk. Armoedebestrijding volstaat in dat geval niet, ook rijkdom en ongelijkheid moeten aangepakt worden.
