Zwart, met gele vlekjes op het lichaam en houdt van humeuze grond. De lengte is 9-11 mm en hij heeft sterk gegroefde dekschilden een bol achterwerk en een verlengde kop. De kever geeft schade aan bladeren, karakteristiek zijn de ronde happen uit de bladrand. De kevers zijn ’s nachts actief en houden zich overdag op in de bodem. Vliegen kunnen ze niet. De larve vormt voor de plant een grotere bedreiging. Verwar deze niet met de engerling! Ze lijken er op maar het verschil zit o.a. in de poten. Deze zijn bij de larve van de taxuskever afwezig, terwijl engerlingen (larve van o.a. de rozen-, mei- en junikever) 6 poten bezit en groter is. De vrouwtjes leggen de eieren in de lente. Ze eten van de bast van wortels en kunnen wanneer ze in grote getallen aanwezig zijn grote schade veroorzaken.


Als bestrijding kunnen we gebruik maken van het parasitaire aaltjes, o.a. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. Echter de bodemtemperatuur moet dan op zo’n 6-10 graden liggen. Dit betekent dat er een langere periode met temperaturen van minimaal 15o C nodig is. De meest aangevreten gewassen zijn: Taxus, Rododendron, Euonymus, Viburnum, Astilbe, Sedum, Primula, Thuja, Picea, Fragaria, Camelia, Azalea, Fuchsia en Huechera.



Bestrijding

Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (aaltjes(nematoden)). Wanneer de nematoden uitgezet worden, gaan ze actief op zoek naar larven die reeds aanwezig zijn in de wortelzone. De nematoden dringen de larven door natuurlijke lichaamsopeningen of rechtstreeks door de lichaamswand binnen. In de larve binnen- gedrongen, komen de bacteriën, die in symbiose met de nematoden leven, vrij. Een larve die aangetast is verkleurt geel tot roodbruin en sterft na een tweetal dagen af. De nematoden vermenigvuldigen zich in de larve en wanneer die ontbindt, verspreidt zich een nieuwe generatie nematoden, op zoek naar volgende slachtoffers. Door vermenging met water worden de nematoden in suspensie gebracht, die over de te behandelen oppervlakte kan verspreid worden.

Met één verpakking van 50 miljoen nematoden kan 100 m² grondoppervlakte behandeld worden. 500 miljoen nematoden voor de behandeling van 1000m².

Zorg ervoor dat de grond vochtig is voordat de aaltje worden ingezet. Beregen vooraf indien nodig. Na behandeling mag de bodem niet uitdrogen! De temperatuur van de grond mag niet onder 6°C dalen gedurende 14 dagen na de behandeling. Vermijd fel zonlicht. Toepassen liefst bij donkere weersomstandigheden en ’s avonds. De aaltjes kunnen maar beperkt verplaatsen in de bodem, dus juist toedienen is erg belangrijk voor een goed resultaat.
