Tijdens onze Dordtse Synode stelde – op 27 november 1618 – voorzitter Bogerman twee vragen. Ten eerste: of de Synode niet van oordeel is dat elke zondagmiddag uit de Catechismus behoort gepreekt te worden. Vervolgens: hoe dit tot stand kan komen. De synode besloot dat de tweede dienst op elke rustdag leerdienst zou zijn vanuit de Heidelbergse Catechismus. Verder moest er gestreefd worden in één jaar de hele Catechismus te behandelen en de preken kort en eenvoudig te laten zijn. De predikanten moesten getrouw zijn: de catechismuspreek moest van rustdag tot rustdag worden gehouden, al zouden zij alleen voor hun eigen gezinnen preken...

Vanwege de vele vacante gemeenten en genoemde opdracht ziet opnieuw een prekenserie met ‘onderwijs in de enige troost’ het licht. Vanuit een tekst uit Gods Woord wordt de prediking van de Catechismus aan het hart gelegd. Met het hartelijke verlangen dat met name ook de jonge generatie het Schriftuurlijke spreken in de Heidelberger opmerkt. Allermeest dat Gods Geest het onderwijs brengt in het hart, opdat de enige troost in leven en sterven mag worden gekend.
