Handgravure wordt al eeuwenlang beoefend en bereikte misschien wel het hoogtepunt van zijn kunstzinnigheid tijdens de Victoriaanse periode (1837-1901). Door de mechanisatie en machines werd handgravure steeds zeldzamer, omdat geautomatiseerde gravures goedkoper waren dan handgravures ooit konden zijn.
