In dit avontuur komt Bram opnieuw oog in oog te staan met zijn gemene tante Lauriël en illusionist Nodin Laffadini. Zij hebben samen alle Bolbliksems verzameld om de weg vrij te maken naar de stad van de eeuwenoude Waterreuzen. Daarna zal niets ze meer tegenhouden om de Rook van de Oudheid op te roepen. Dat kan Bram natuurlijk niet laten gebeuren.

In een poging de belangrijkste Bolbliksems te herstellen, reist hij met Mei-Lin af naar New York. In een verborgen grot doen ze een bijzondere ontdekking, die Mei-Lins wereld op zijn kop zet. Dan belandt Bram ineens aan de andere kant van de wereld, waar hij kennis maakt met een bijzonder wezen. Kan Bram zijn weg terug naar Mei-Lin vinden en nog belangrijker: slaagt hij erin zijn twee ergste vijanden voorgoed te verslaan?
