De film speelt zich af na de Tweede Wereldoorlog waar de intellectuele man Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) een nieuwe religieuze organisatie opricht. Phoenix speelt de rol van de getraumatiseerde marinier Freddie Quell, die na de oorlog verward thuiskomt en al snel de rechterhand wordt van Lancaster. Sturdy and good fit.
