In een andere versie van de mythe zou Medusa de toorn van Athena hebben gewekt door in de tempel van Athena de liefde met Poseidon te bedrijven.

Medusa had een bijzondere schoonheid. Ze woonde in een land waar nooit de zon scheen. Medusa smeekte Athena haar te laten vertrekken naar zonnige streken. Toen Athena dit weigerde, vernederde zij de godin. In een andere versie van de mythe zou Medusa de toorn van Athena hebben gewekt door in de tempel van Athena de liefde met Poseidon te bedrijven. Athena nam wraak door het haar van Medusa in een nest kronkelende slangen te veranderen. Verder zou eenieder die Medusa in het gezicht keek, ter plaatse verstenen. Uiteindelijk wordt ze gedood en onthoofd door Perseus, die hierbij door Athena geholpen werd. Uit haar bloed worden (als gevolg van een eerdere liefde met Poseidon) het gevleugelde paard Pegasos en de reus Chrysaor geboren. Uiteindelijk werd haar hoofd door Perseus aan Athena geschonken, die het op haar schild plaatste om vijanden mee te kunnen verstenen.
