Discover the poignant narrative of 'Niue and the Great War,' a compelling account that explores the unique yet often overlooked role of the small island of Niue during World War I. Written by renowned author Margaret Pointer and published by Otago University Press, this paperback edition is a must-read for history enthusiasts and those interested in Pacific studies. The book dives deep into the story of 160 Niuean men who bravely joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915, embarking on a journey that took them from their native island to Auckland, Egypt, and France. Many had never left Niue before, faced significant cultural challenges, and tragically, suffered from European diseases upon arrival. Within just three months, over 80% were hospitalized, highlighting the harsh realities faced by colonial troops during the war. Pointer's extensive research, commenced in the 1990s while living on Niue, has unearthed new photographs and insights, enriching the narrative with fresh perspectives. In 'Niue and the Great War,' readers gain a broader understanding of the Pacific context of the war and the critical contributions of colonial forces, particularly those of 'coloured' troops to the Allied efforts. Perfect for anyone interested in military history, colonial studies, or the rich stories of Pacific nations, this beautifully produced book contains 216 pages of enlightening content, measuring 156 x 220 x 20 mm. The story of tiny Niue’s involvement in the Great War has captivated people since an account was first published by Margaret Pointer in 2000. In 1915, 160 Niuean men joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as part of the Maori Reinforcements and set sail to Auckland and then Egypt and France. Most had never left the island before, or worn shoes before. Most spoke no English. Most significantly, they had no immunity to European disease. Within three months of leaving New Zealand, over 80 per cent of them had been hospitalised and the army authorities withdrew them. Margaret Pointer became involved in research to trace the lost story of Niue’s involvement in World War I while living on the island in the 1990s. The resulting book, Tagi Tote e Loto Haaku: My Heart is Crying a Little, was published in 2000. Her research has continued since, and Niue and the Great War contains much new material together with new photographs. This moving story has now been set in a wider Pacific context and also considers the contribution made by colonial troops, especially â€coloured’ ones, to the Allied effort.

Excellent salt grinder
This ceramic grinder surprised me for its good quality. The design is very elegant, with the stainless steel part and the glass jar that allows you to easily see how much product is left inside. It feels solid and well built.
The ceramic grinding mechanism works very smoothly and crushes the salt evenly. In addition, it is easy to refill and clean, which is very practical to use in the kitchen every day.
It has a perfect size: it does not take up much space but has good capacity. Without a doubt it is a very useful and beautiful product for the table or the kitchen. I totally recommend it!

Just what I was looking for in a salt shaker. It’s on the smaller side and the quality is great. I’m very satisfied with my purchase.

Great size, design, and 100% metal grinding mechanism
Color: 1pcs-Sliver-304
***PLEASE NOTE: This review is only for the more expensive version here with the all metal grinding mechanism and not the cheaper version that looks the same but has a ceramic grinder that’s also available on this page — hope this helps avoid potential confusion. My advice is to splurge on the metal grinder version.
***UPDATE 3/18/26***
Well, after almost two years of fairly heavy daily use the first flaw has emerged so thought I’d share. Yesterday the silver wrapping on the grinder part came loose making it hard to turn the grinder as it was slipping. I did a quick fix by adding some super glue around the seam at the top of the grinder and that’s done the trick at least for now. I’m leaving my 5-star rating because I remain thrilled with its overall performance and frankly would’ve ordered another one if this fix didn’t work, but so far it appears to be holding. 🤞 So still very happy but just wanted to share in case anyone else experiences this.
***UPDATE 8/18/25***
So I’ve now had this for over a year, and under pretty heavy daily use I’m happy to report it still works as well as the day I bought it. Great product, and it’s a pleasure to use every day.
***UPDATE 10/3/2024***
So, after almost four months of pretty heavy daily use I just wanted to report back that this grinder continues to work perfectly and shows every sign of lasting for years to come. I especially like the glass jar so I can see when I’m running low on black peppercorns, and even though it’s got a small form factor it holds a lot so I don’t have to refill it frequently despite using it multiple times daily. I’m super happy with this product all around and recommend it highly!!!
================================
Been using this for a few days now and am very happy so far. I’ve used a traditional wood pepper mill my whole life, but now it’s just me so I wanted something smaller and with a glass body so I can easily see when I need to add more peppercorns. I also wanted an all metal grinding mechanism (that this version has for an few dollars more) instead of ceramic, which doesn’t seem to hold up as well, and I definitely wanted no plastic parts involved in the actual grinding either — don’t need any more microplastics in my diet thank you. This one seemed to check all the boxes, and so far it’s been great. Initially it was set to a more fine, powdery grind, but it was super easy to adjust to a more course grind that I prefer and it’s perfect. Overall it seems well built and is very easy to use, and as long as this holds up it’s a definite keeper. I’ll report back if any future mishaps, but as of now I’d recommend this very highly!
