A prophy cup is a dental instrument used to remove plaque, stains, and other debris from the surface of the teeth during a dental cleaning procedure. It consists of a small, hand-held cup made of a durable, sterilizable plastic material, with a round, concave shape on the end that is used to hold a prophy paste.
Prophy cups are typically used in conjunction with a prophy angle, which is a handpiece that rotates the cup at high speeds to effectively remove plaque and polish the teeth. The prophy cup is attached to the prophy angle, and the prophy paste is placed inside the cup. As the prophy angle is used to scrub the teeth, the paste is forced against the surface of the teeth, helping to remove stains and polish the enamel.
Prophy cups are an essential tool for dental professionals and are widely used in dental offices, clinics, and other healthcare settings. They are known for their effectiveness at removing plaque and stains from the teeth and helping to prevent the development of dental problems such as cavities and gum disease.
