Picasso’s War and Peace

PICASSO, Pablo; Claude ROY. La Guerre et la Paix. Paris: Editions Cercle D’Art. 1954.

Folio. Publisher’s oatmeal cloth, with orange belly-band printed in black and white, no dust-jacket (as issued), spine and upper board lettered in burgundy; pp. ‘153’ (i.e. 151), [1], [2 (colophon, blank)], with the two large folding plates in pocket to rear board; slightly shaken; else a very good copy.

First trade edition, one of 6000 copies, of this monumental work on Picasso’s enormous two-panel La Guerre et la paix (War and Peace) – even larger than Guernica – for the deconsecrated Romanesque chapel of the the Château de Vallauris, published five years before the chapel was officially opened to the public and instrumental in publicising the work.

There were also one hundred copies of the édition de tête with an original lithograph by Picasso. To accommodate the vaulted ceilings of the deserted chapel – which Picasso aimed to turn into a ‘temple of peace’ – he structured the panels on thirty-two pieces of hardboard. He made over two hundred and eighty preparatory drawings, several of which are reproduced here. Between 1952 and 1959, the installation ‘remained largely unknown. Claude Roy’s book on La Guerre et la paix [...] brought these large panels to wider attention before the chapel’s public opening’ (Forest, trans.).

Jean Cocteau, who saw the work being created in Picasso’s studio at Fournas – along with, amongst others, Françoise Gilot and Claude Roy, author of the present work – wrote that ‘the first impression [of La Guerre et la paix] is that of a nave, a church; it seems that everyone who enters [the studio] takes off their hat. I take off my hat’ (ibid.). Picasso left the drips of paint as they were, arguing that ‘one doesn’t advise an unhappy person to wipe away their tears’.

Quality shirt. Not too blousy.
I'm 5'11" and hover around 175-180 lbs. so I'm a pretty average guy. I've been thin my whole life but now I'm in my 40's so if I don't watch it, my stomach will get bigger. I bought this shirt in slim-fit first. It was perfect but since these shirts are 100% cotton, I was concerned that after a couple washings, it would be too small (especially in the stomach area). I returned the slim-fit and bought this regular-fit (medium). For this review, I thought it would be helpful to compare the Amazon Essentials shirt to The Gap's regular oxford shirt. I've always liked the fit of Gap oxford shirts. Upon inspection, the weight and feel of the Amazon oxford cloth is exactly the same at the Gap's. I laid one of my old Gap shirts on top of this Amazon Essentials oxford. You can see from the pictures that the torso cut is exactly the same (about 21 inches pit-to-pit seam). I like that. I'm not a fat guy and I don't want a blousy shirt. This is neither too blousy nor too slim. Just right. The sleeves are perhaps 1/2 inch longer than the Gap shirt. Perhaps one negative is the tail. The Amazon Essentials tail is 1.5-2" longer than the Gap shirt. This makes the Amazon Essentials shirt a touch long for wearing untucked in my opinion. However, if you do tuck, a longer shirt stays tucked-in. So it depends how you want to wear it. I have a lady who does alterations. She'll charge $10 to shorten the tail if I wanted that. If I do have the Amazon shirt altered, it would still be a bargain. These are good quality shirts with a nice cut to them. I won't hesitate to buy them again. Highly recommended.

Decent quality. Sizing is normal but a bit generous in the midsection
Fit Type: Regular Fit, Color: White, Size: Large
I was impressed. Shirt is of fairly decent quality- thick cotton. My husband is normally a large. Given the sizing chart we almost ordered a medium, but it was good we bought a large. The sleeves are perfect but afraid it may shrink in the dryer. I think the reason people say loose fit is because it is boxy (square). Fine under a suit and we needed it urgently.

With this shirt I say I do
Color: Khaki, Size: Small, Color: Khaki, Size: Small
This shirt definitely compliments the suit my son bought. Very light ,very comfortable, not quite tight fit ,but I can say that it fits perfectly .It matches well with a few colors ,purple being one of them . For having a teenager that at times mistreats his clothes ,and just throws the clothes on the hanger really any way . Not many wrinkles was really on it and I really had to fight whatever that was in his closet just to take this out and it was hanged up . For having it for more than a month I say not bad . It is worth it. And if it was me I wouldn't have any wrinkles on it what's so ever. Very delicate and easy to move in it. My son wore it to his friend's graduation party not one wrinkle on it afterwards. Very casual look. I will buy more for him
