Back in print after more than 20 years, Pride Against Prejudice by Aunty Ida West is a must-read for all Tasmanians.
Aunty Ida West was a revered elder who spent her life advocating for the recognition and rights of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. Her memoir Pride Against Prejudice, originally published in 1984, is the first autobiography published by a Palawa person. Born on Truwana/Cape Barren Island, Aunty Ida was a tireless campaigner for her people and a unifying figure and her steadfast efforts were instrumental in the return of Wybalenna to the Palawa community in 1999.
It’s pretty important you know, the land, it doesn’t matter how small, it’s something … just a little sacred site … that’s Wybalenna. There was a massacre there, sad things there but we try not to go over that. Where the bad was, we can always make it good. ~Aunty Ida West, 1995
