Common names: Hemp Dogbane, Common Dogbane, Amy Root, Indian Hemp, Prairie Dogbane

Family: Apocynaceae

Origin/Distribution: Occurs in all contiguous states and some Canadian provinces. Native to Maine

Habitat: rocky open woods and glades, disturbed areas, roadsides, woodland edges

More: Provides nectar for pollinators. Larval host plant for the Snowberry Clearwing moth, Hemaris diffinis, which is native to Maine. This is a captivating moth that looks a bit like a hummingbird. Magical! Back to Dogbane: Native bees like to nest in the hollow stems, so while tidying up (if you do that sort of thing) cut back to about knee height and allow the stems to persist from season to season. Don't worry, this strong growing plant will cover the old stems up in no time. Will spread by rhizome and is good for erosion control or holding an edge against invasives. All parts are toxic, but the hardened sap has been used for chewing gum and the roots, latex, and berries have been used medicinally. The stems have been used for fiber and cordage. This plant contains toxic glycosides, cymarin and apocymarin. However, these glycosides have also shown anti-tumor activity. Proceed with caution. The sap may cause contact dermatitis in some people. This is a very charismatic plant to my mind, but it should not go in a border with any delicate specials or shrinking violets and should be grown with full knowledge of its numerous qualities.

Nice tool, but with a 4 year life span.
I bought this on Nov. 2020, after hand surgery left me temporarily unable to do simple yet necessary tasks- like opening a wine bottle. 🤪 It's compact, nicely designed, and reliable. I kept it plugged in all the time with no issues. The only negative so far is the blue light which stays on whenever the unit is in the base, fully charged or not. (Not a fan of the many small yet bright lights from all appliances! Placing a Talking Yoda figurine in front of it blocked enough of the light to satisfy me). I found it easy to use and appreciated the foil cutter. Worked well on all types of corks. Flash forward to spring 2024... Despite the constant charging, the corkscrew dies at maybe a half inch into the cork. Just slows down and dies. Having read earlier reviews, I may try to crack it open and replace the battery. But ultimately, having regained my hand strength back, I'm more likely to go back to an old fashioned, reliable, hand operated corkscrew and celebrate the loss of weird lights and needed electricity. Conclusion: unless you are recovering from hand surgery, just get a good quality non- electric corkscrew and use it for 75 years (optimistically). Best deal ever. And you can take it camping too.

Wonderful opener
Color: Black
FINALLY!! A product that works efficiently, exactly as promised, and does an excellent job with no learning curve. This wine opener is easy to use, and works exactly as it should. The capsule cutter works like a breeze, and the cork lifter is smooth and fast. It pulls the cork, then reverses, and pushes the cork back off and into your waiting palm. Totally impressive! Wish all products were made as well.

Great wine ipener
Color: Black
Works great and good cutter. I wish the base was a little smaller I don’t need to display the wine aerator so it would have been better to make the base small and just be a charger and bottle cutter holder
