The T-62 was developed from the earlier T-54/55 series of tanks, but due to the cost of production never managed to completely replace its predecessor.
Produced from 1961 until the early 1970s, the T-62 was capable of deep-fording by means of a snorkel over the loader's hatch and was fitted with infra-red night vision equipment, turret ventilation equipment, nuclear biological and chemical protection and an ability to create instant smoke by injecting diesel into the exhaust. Armed with a 115mm U-5TS gun, the T-62 was first used operationally in the Middle East during the Arab-Israeli wars.
The T-62M was an extensively upgraded T-62 fitted with BDD applique armour, additional belly armour and 10mm think reinforced rubber side skirts. The BDD applique armour includes two horseshoe shaped blocks fitted to the turret and a plate on the glacis. The T-62M is also fitted with the "Volna" fire control system with new sights, stabilisers, computer systems and radios. The T-62M was first used in the Soviet-Afghan War.
