ABOUT THE WEBINAR

More and more aspiring television writers are coming up with their own original series ideas these days -- and writing pilots on spec -- but there is very little guidance on how to do this from existing screenwriting books and courses. Knowledge about what networks, producers and agents look for in a series idea and pilot is known by experienced industry players and established TV writers, but not by those trying to break in -- and it's a very different set of guidelines from feature film writing, or even writing a sample episode of an existing series. But original pilots are what showrunners mostly look at today as writing samples for openings on their staffs, so it's crucial to understand how to create a winning one.

Multiple Emmy-winning writer-producer Erik Bork (best known for the HBO miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS and FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON), has developed numerous drama and comedy series ideas into pitches or spec pilot scripts, and optioned or sold them to companies like NBC, Fox Broadcasting, Sony TV, ABC Studios and Imagine Entertainment. Beyond that, he's participated in dozens and dozens of meetings with network and studio executives, producers, and his agents at CAA to discuss ideas which would eventually sell or not sell, and the reasons for same -- forming an education-on-the-job about how primetime series TV works (broadcast and cable), and what is looked for from writers trying to break in.

This webinar will include all of the important principles Erik has learned in that process about the elements of a successful drama or comedy series premise, what types of shows tend to work or not work (and why), and what a pilot script should include and focus on. He will share his thoughts on the various television genres, and how cable, premium cable, and streaming services have changed the landscape (but not necessarily the writer's main job). With multiple examples from successful shows and his own history developing original series, he'll take attendees through a crash course on everything that they need to know (and probably don't yet know) about what the television industry wants, needs and values in terms of original series ideas and pilots.

What you'll learn:

  • "What's the franchise?" -- and other annoying questions executives ask.
  • Why doctors, lawyers and cops always seem to dominate prime time.
  • "Wanting something they can never have": the key to good TV characters.
  • The emotional thrill ride that is the annual series development cycle.
  • How most aspiring writers think of television storytelling the wrong way.
  • The (superficial) differences between broadcast, basic and pay cable.
  • How "procedural" and "personal" are the only two kinds of TV stories.
  • How "3-act structure" works on TV, despite shows not having 3 acts!
  • Juggling A, B and C stories, and the characters who "get" them.
  • What a "premise pilot" is, and why you really shouldn't write one.

Who should attend?

  • Writers who are considering writing television scripts (of any kind).
  • Writers who think they have a great idea for a series (or wish they did).
  • Writers who are tired of the negatives of feature screenplay writing.
  • Writers who think television is possibly the best place for them.
  • Writers interested in getting on a TV writing staff.
  • Writers who live in L.A. or outside of L.A.
  • Writers who have a television script they think is ready.
  • Writers looking for inspiration and guidance from someone just like them.

Cute little bug that does its job. Good value.
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
Not bad for the price. Pretty easy to set up (only user stupidity gave me any issues). Worked well for my first cut. Lasted about 32 minutes. I'm gonna give the batteries a more significant charge and try again, though I did charge for over 12 hours and the lights were solid green. So not sure what's going on there. I don't understand how "user technique" applies here, though I did hit a lot of hidden sticks. Could have burned through more energy? Idk. But it did handle those sticks like a champ! I made sure to get all the big ones out of the way, but there were some small ones and it just ran em right over good as any gas mower. I would probably play pickup sticks a little longer beforehand next time, but I was a little pressed for energy today. Anyways, irrespective of the actual function of the machine, I prefer this dramatically over either wider or self-propelled models. Self-propulsion can be very annoying when trying to get around difficult terrain or obstacles. I also enjoy the exercise! The small form factor is very nice again for obstacles or weaving between objects. It also is nice and light and easy to push. After 30+ minutes of mowing I'm not even remotely sore. I also enjoyed just getting to smell the fresh cut grass rather than belching gas smoke! I'm looking forward to low maintenance on this lil guy. The blades seem pretty well made, and I will be keeping an eye on them for wear and tear. I had a nice day outside in perfect weather with this little bug, and can recommend it if you're specifically looking for a smaller mower that lasts 30-40 mins on a charge and can deal with a push mower.

Powerful, easy to use, and perfect for small yards.
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
I was pleasantly surprised at just how well this mower cuts and handles! Years ago I bought a Greenworks electric mower and loved it, but it was a pain trying to pull the cord around. When I happened upon this mower, I thought I'd give it a try and am so glad I did! The box is heavy, but this 63 year old woman managed to get it inside the garage and out of the box. The handle is simple to install, as is the grass catcher. The height adjustment mechanism is one of the easiest I've ever used. Once the batteries were fully charged, (they do take a few hours), I had my small front yard mowed in less than fifteen minutes. It isn't as quiet as an electric, but it's not as loud as a gas powered and there are NO fumes. I used the grass catcher and when I emptied it I found that the grass mulched was almost like saw dust! I hope this machine lasts a long time!

Good little mower but not perfect
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah), Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
Decent little mower. Purchased it so I could take the sketchyness out of my front yard using my rider with the slope I have. Did a good job cutting the grass and is super quiet and very light weight. I've added some pictures of the handle extended and folded down next to my other tools for some size comparison as well. Stores well too. Grey button circled is how you adjust the deck height. Press and lift or push while holding the button down until you get your desired height and release. Super easy. Battery life is ok. I wouldn't be able to do my entire yard front and back on one charge. Batteries were almost dead after what felt like 25 minutes of use but my grass is rather thick so theres that. It did what I wanted it to do on one charge so I'm happy although it won't do a full yard front and back. You would need an extra set of batteries for that. Little assembly required. You have to put the grab bar on and install the mulch plug or bag yourself and charge the batteries before use and you're good to go. Not a super strong mower but thats to be expected at the price point. Strong enough to get the job done though. Some of the thicker parts I had to do two passes to get a good cut and it stalled out on me once. Thats ok though because I have the mulch plug installed and mulching boggs down any mower. 4 stars because there isn't a good carry handle to use when it is folded up that I could find. You kind of have to manhandle the thing into where you want once its folded up. Opened the box when it got delivered to find the batteries and charger just tossed in by the factory. Was a bit frustrated seeing that stuff just banging around in the box. Pros Quiet, light weight, stores great decently strong Cons No go handle when folded up, packaging Would I recommend? Yes. Good cheap alternative if you have a very small yard or are needing something to edge with or need to get to a hard spot that a rider is not the best for. Plus you don't have to worry about a cheap gas mower blowing your arm out with 10 minutes of pull starting.

Nice toy.
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
This is definitely my favorite lawn mower I ever had. It is super light weight and very quiet. It is easy to put in my shed because I can lift it with one hand. I do not need to worry about spilling gas or oil. The arms fold easily. I feel like I am pushing one of those little baby lawn mowers with the bubbles. If you have a bigger lawn, I would use a bigger size than 17 inch. It is perfect for my yard but takes a little more passes. We will see how long the batteries last. So far, I used it a few times and I can do the front and back in one charge.

Thoroughly disappointed
Size: 17" (2 x 4.0Ah)
This is my third green Works cordless electric lawnmower. I am thoroughly disappointed in this one. They have changed the mechanism for lowering & raising the wheel height. Previous mowers were very easy, just pull the lever to the corresponding number. This machine you have to push in a button which when pushed will lower it immediately trying to raise the wheel height is incredibly difficult. To add insult to injury the little red clip that tells you what the height is is so poorly made that it fell off and can’t be reattached. Completely dissatisfied wish I hadn’t wasted my money on this piece of junk.
