The film starred Joan Crawford as a prostitute named Sadie who is temporarily stranded on a Pacific island and Walter Huston as a missionary who is torn between his desire to reform Sadie and his physical attraction to her. The story resolves in a manner faithful to Maugham's story with the missionary's suicide and Sadie's unapologetic return to her depraved lifestyle.
