Overview

Regulating relationships among strangers was a primary concern of the early modern world. Both the rediscovery of classical texts and new encounters between Europeans and Arabs, Asians, and Native Americans required a rethinking of the laws and customs of hospitality on both a local and a global scale. Theological conflicts and shifting national alignments in Europe itself also imperiled traditional conceptions of host and gust, forcing thinkers to envision their responsibilities to others in new ways. The thirteen articles in this collection offer case studies that examine the philosophies and dynamics of hospitality in early modern Italy, England, Central Europe, and the Ottoman Empire. In doing so, they explore practices, symbols, and philosophies of hospitality and obligation in the early modern world.

Praise

"This fascinating collection of articles and its suggestive juxtapositions extend the question of hospitality in early modern Europe, showing its implications across institutions, cultures, and social practices."
- Sean Lawrence, University of British Columbia

"Tracking hospitality in civic, religious, literary, and international places and spaces, this stunning new collection of essays crosses Europe in search of hospitality’s accommodations, achievements, and catastrophes."
- Julia Reinhard Lupton, University of California, Irvine

"In dialogue with contemporary theory and grounded on solid archival research, the essays in this volume make a compelling case for hospitality’s place in early modern thought and society from London to Rome and from Venice to the eastern frontiers of its commercial routes."
- Matteo Soranzo, McGill University

Reviews

"The entire volume certainly accomplishes its goal of convincing readers to rethink a monolithic approach toward early modern hospitality and challenging readers to look deeper at its practices and historic implementations, beyond a simplistic reading that might define hospitality as merely an act of pious charity or magnanimity. Expertly divided into sensible, thoughtful sections and with meticulous ordering of essays within the section, the resulting volume is one that is refreshingly clear, thought provoking, and much needed in the field of early modern cultural studies." - Tessa C. Gurney, High Point University, in Annali d'italianistica, volume 40 (2022)

Cutting boards will splinter
A lot of the reviews that are saying these wooden boards splinter are true. I was excited to find some nontoxic wooden cutting boards for such a great price. Upon arrival, they seemed pretty decent quality when I pulled them out of the package. I proceeded to use the large one so I gave it a quick rinse with warm water and was taken back by fumes coming off the cutting board and then wiped it down with a white paper towel and my paper towel was brown. I was a little discouraged, but decided to give it a better rinse with a soap, free brush. At that point once I dried it off whatever coding was on it came off and it was rough and splinters everywhere. Definitely a little upset that the splinters could’ve ended up in our food. These are not good quality non-toxic cutting boards I would rather spend a little extra money on a quality board that is not going to sprinter Wood shavings into my food.

Very good, just be sure not to leave in water
Overall, this is a very good product as my wife and I are moving towards non-toxic kitchen materials. My only advice is to make sure to not leave this submerged in water otherwise mold will easily form.

Truly non-toxic but a little rough and uneven
I’m very impressed with the packaging of this. When I first opened the box I was shocked that there was a plastic wrapping around the boards when they promised to be non toxic but then I saw the sticker that the wrapping was not plastic and I was very happy. The boards themselves are pretty nice and a good thickness but the only thing is I feel like the board is a little rough and parts of the board come up and are not smooth.

Not Durable…Splintered….
Had to chuck these. I loved them at first but they are not durable. Scratched themselves up right away and then the mid sized one started to splinter. I didn’t even have it for very long before I had to get rid of them. Long enough to not be able to return. I prefer the bamboo as far as wood goes, but switched to an antibacterial. It’s crazy because I had the same cutting boards for years and in the past month I’ve had to replace them 3 times now. I was so disappointed because there were such amazing reviews. Sadly that was not the case for me. I give it a 3 because they are absolutely beautiful…..you get points for being beautiful I suppose in this world. But not durable. At least not for me.
