2 Surprising Strategies for Character Development: Character-Based and Plot-Driven Video DownloadWe writers have a natural inclination either to draw story from characters (character based) or draw characters from story and ideas (plot driven). As a result, Character Development manifests as either the primary starting place (character based) or the secondary consideration (plot driven). What does this mean in practical terms? Writers of mystery, suspense, horror, romance, etc. build characters to come to life in the arc of the story that ignites

We writers have a natural inclination either to draw story from characters (character-based) or draw characters from story and ideas (plot-driven). As a result, Character Development manifests as either the primary starting place (character-based) or the secondary consideration (plot-driven). What does this mean in practical terms? Writers of mystery, suspense, horror, romance, etc. build characters to come to life in the arc of the story that ignites the writer and allows for the rules of that specific genre. Writers of literary, mainstream, etc. find that a character comes to life and the story comes from the character. The rules of the genre, the path of the arc, can seem more forgiving--but aren't. All of us writers must let characters come to life, breathe, and take on that portion of existence within the story.

This tutorial looks at the different strategies that allow characters to develop appropriately for character-based and plot-driven fiction. Considerations are sometimes surprising and inspiring: Plot-driven needs backstory development, character-based needs now-in-the-moment, while both need lots and lots of attitude and "feet-on-the-ground" freedom.

So which kind of writer are you? Plot-driven or character-based? Who are your role models and which kind of writer are they?

In this 83-minute tutorial video, you'll discover:

  • How to know what type of writer you are: Plot-driven or Character-based
  • Backstory: How to get the most out of it without driving readers crazy
  • Where does the story begin, on the page and in your head
  • Playing with 1st and Close Third Points of View
  • Reliability vs. Unreliability of the Main Character
  • Character Chemistry on the Page
  • Liking Your Character Enough or Too Much

Knowing how to develop your characters for either a character-based or plot-driven story means that your characters will either be or realize the story effectively. If you're writing a mystery, your character will move the plot forward without getting in the way. If you're writing a mainstream novel, your character will give you a story. Either way, readers will believe your characters--and be compelled to turn pages. Now that's what we all want, right?

Half gone in the first 45 minutes...
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Bone
our medium sized dog is an aggressive chewer but we expected mire than 3/4 of an hour before the bone's demise. Half gone quickly, heavy stitching included, so threw away the second half for fear of a blockage. Not safe, not durable, disappointing. Sorry, cannot recommend this one.

Puppy loves it!
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Bone
I have a very energetic lab puppy - this chew kept her still for longer than any other toy I’ve tried (besides bully sticks and peanut butter). Highly recommend!

Good for an aggressive chewer
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Bone
My dog loves it. These last a long time. My dog is a Rottweiler/American Bulldog mix, she goes through a lot of toys. So, I try to buy her something that has no stuffing, but will keep her from getting bored. This one has lasted about 6-7 months, the leather is chewed off, but it's still the shape of a bone. I did just order another though, the one she has is a little stinky from her slobber. :-)

Not as expected
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Bone
I have been looking for these ever since we got a similar one at Sierras for our 1 1/2 yo Cane Corso. She is brutal on chew toys and the first one from the box store held up well. However, this did not hold up as well and she was done with it in less than a week. Still looking for that perfect toy.

More durable than expected.
Size: 5 Inch, Color: Raccoon
I was walking through my front room the other day when I noticed a suspicious spot on the floor. It looked like something I should not touch without gloves. As I got closer, I realized what it was. It’s the ‘guts’ from this toy. My dogs (Pit Bull and German Shorthaired Pointer) were each given one. Both are aggressive chewers with their toys. They ATE the faces off these toys and now play with the felt interior. I’m still trying to figure out how they ate through leather while the felt remained intact. Regardless, they still play with them. Now they are basically semi-fuzzy throw toys we can throw in the house because they don’t leave marks on the wall if our aim is off. Sometimes things work out the way they should. :)
