This White Flower-Shaped "Rinka" Small Plate is handcrafted by Mashiko potter Ryuta Goto, embodying the rich tradition of Mashiko ware.
Kohiki refers to a type of pottery where a formed clay body is coated with a white slip, followed by a transparent glaze.
The slightly thicker application of slip gives the piece a plump, soft texture with gentle feel. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice many fine crazing patterns, which add depth and character to the piece, allowing it to develop a unique patina over time and enhancing its beauty.
The plate measures approximately 14 cm (5.5 inches) in diameter, making it a perfect size for serving small portions, such as appetizers, condiments, or desserts. Its compact size is ideal for adding a touch of elegance to any table setting.
Measurements: Approx. φ14cm x 3.5cm / 5.5" x 1.38"
Material Type: Ceramic
Designed and handcrafted in Mashiko, Japan
Each piece is unique, with slight variations in color, shape, and size. These differences are a hallmark of handmade craftsmanship, adding to the charm and character of the plate. We hope you enjoy these subtle, distinctive qualities that make each piece special.
You may notice fine, crackle-like patterns called kannyu (crazing) on the surface of white or kohiki (slip-glazed) pottery. These patterns occur naturally during the firing process and create a delicate, one-of-a-kind expression in each piece.
Over time, subtle color changes may develop within the kannyu, allowing the vessel to gain depth and character as it is used — one of the unique pleasures of living with this type of pottery.
