Blending tense atmospherics, Italo Disco, and psychedelic industrial through a cache of synthesizers old and new, California Chrome is an exploration of hallucinatory EBM recorded meticulously at his home studio over the course of twelve months. “I wanted to challenge myself to create a record with an internal narrative and pursue performing the narrative out on the road as much as I able,” Harris explains. “I want people to feel something in a personal way that might scare them a little, something they’re afraid to face within themselves.”

A self-confessed “gear addict”, Austin based producer Xander Harris recorded California Chrome at his patchwork home studio which he compares to “a computer lab amidst the graffiti of a mad man’s asylum walls.” Citing a long list of precious vintage Korg synthesizers and drum machines as his primary tools, Harris rejigged his home set up to create California Chrome: “I took a step back from my past software based set ups to focus on a 90% hardware based set up this time around. Using mostly hardware meant upgrading my older gear. I’m constantly changing and re-arranging my set up.”

Horror is a consistent theme in Harris’s work, especially considering his music’s experimentation of Giallo-Horror hybrids: “‘Deep Red’ was the first David Argento film I ever watched and the movie made a lasting impression, especially the soundtrack. Goblin’s use of synthesizer and Chris Squire style bass lines fascinated me. Thankfully in Austin, we have video stores like I Love Video and Vulcan Video where I can rent older Giallo films I’ve always wanted to see and usually those films aren’t on streaming platforms. In regards to the Giallo genre itself, I’m drawn to the quirky plot lines, 70s fashion, photography, and ground breaking soundtracks.”

The album’s title, California Chrome, comes Harris’s fascination with 60s counter-culture in California: “For the amount of positive energy gathered during the late 60s and early 70s, those same people searching for positive change ignored the swirling darkness in their communities that lead to the Manson Murders, Altamont, and the sometimes harsh realities of living life without regard to consequence. This album is a soundtrack exploring disillusionment from spending too many years ignoring my own problems while exploring mysticism to justify how checked out of life I had become. That dreadful feeling of how ignoring bad habits comes back to haunt you in ways you never expected.”

The album feature artwork by friend and frequent collaborator Nicolas Nadeau: “The colour scheme reminds me of certain colour palettes in the urban and rural areas of California,” Harris says. “The pyramid struck with the occult theme of the album and the structure in general had a psychedelic madness that looked like the collapse of a Roman after life.”

A long-time resident of Austin, Texas, Harris has deep ties to the burgeoning live hardware performance community of the area. His remix work has seen him reinterpret material from Peaking Lights, Zyna Hel and Mogwai, creating a Crowley-ian cosmic tone for the dance floor. Debut album Urban Gothic (released on Not Not Fun Records) landed Harris on Fact Magazine’s Best 50 LPs of 2011 list, bringing his work to the attention of Rock Action founders and Scottish legends Mogwai.

He was confused, I was amused!
Color: Turn Around, Size: Level 2
This toy was quite well made, the materials are solid and once assembled, its very sturdy! Super easy to put together too. It comes with two kinds of lids for the test tubes, three little holes (intermediate/ difficult) and one big hole (beginner/easy). So the actual toy was really nice. There was only one problem...for some inexplicable reason...my dog (3 yr/ 20lb/ shorkie) was afraid of it! He's used lots of puzzle / game toys in the past, but for some reason this one weirded him out. No matter what I did, I couldn't get him to even try moving the test tubes. The farthest I got was having him eat a treat off the edge of a test tube once or twice (hence the video, there's a piece of chicken sitting on the top). Mostly he would just growl at the toy or eye it suspiciously, and then run away. I would describe his overall attitude as agitated skepticism with a hint of annoyance...specifically toward me! (As if saying "what the heck is this thing??") I will say the customer service was pretty good. And I definitely got some personal entertainment watching my dog run around and growl at the toy that was just sitting there. (:

Can't beat the price if you have smaller dogs
Color: Turn Around, Size: Level 2
This is my 2nd one, which was bought for my mom's dogs. They absolutely love it when they come to my house. I live that they have to get their nose off the floor to figure it out and that there are more than 1 tube that they have to flip (think about). My only thumbs down isn't a big deal but would be the hard base. The treats fling off this base and can end up anywhere in the room. I think if it wasn't so hard, they wouldn't have to walk away from the activity or have to fight over who get the "reward" (It's usually the other dog waiting to chase where they fly off to). It doesn't flip over unless they run into it which doesn't happen often, although our dogs are all under 15 lbs. Imnsure if a bigger dog were to use this, it wouldn't stand up well and may break. It was easy to put together, and functions very well. Our dogs think this is the most fun toy out of all the interactive togs we have (which is A LOT).

Amazing!!!
Color: Turn Around, Size: Level 2
This is an amazing mental stimulation toy for my dog! And it’s a perfect one for dogs who are learning. He picked it up right away and loves it! I can’t wait to get the other ones they have. Seriously so amazing. My very active Aussie can spend 30 minutes doing this and not get bored.

Great for bored dogs
Color: Flip Board, Size: Level 2
Great dog puzzle! My pup loves this, he did chew the peg portion once he got them out so they can be put back in. They are tough for small dogs to get out so I think he plotted it out.

My dog is beside herself with glee
Color: Blue
This was a good find. My Lab has a soft mouth so she won’t destroy it, not sure how it would hold up for our neighbor’s German Shepherd with his strong jaws and big teeth.
